26 January 1950: The story behind Republic Day and its significance

During Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress in 1929, a resolution was passed demanding complete independence on January 26.

January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day of India as on this the day our constitution came into force. On Republic Day, the constitution prepared by drafting committee headed by BR Ambedkar was implemented, replacing the Government of India Act 1935. After 200 years of struggle, India was finally a federal democratic sovereign nation.

Story behind Republic Day

Though India gained independence on August 15, 1947 but our country continued to be led by British monarch King George VI. Constituent Assembly appointed drafting committee to draft a legal framework that would be passed by it. BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of our constitution was heading the committee. The constitution was passed on November 26, 1949 but those who have celebrated India's first Independence Day ,i.e., January 26, 1930 decided to wait for two more months. To remember the day and to remind countrymen of its importance, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day.

Importance of Republic Day

During Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress in 1929, a resolution was passed demanding complete independence on January 26. Also, the president of the session Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolour as the day was declared Purna Swaraj Diwas. Leaders continued to celebrated the day as Independence Day for the next 17 years. To honour the significance of January 26, constituent assembly decided to enforce the constitution on this day

How is Republic Day celebrated?

On the eve of Republic Day, President of India addresses the nation. On January 26, President hoists the National Flag and ceremonial parade begins from Vijay Chowk. The parade is witnessed by many people along with foreign guests, dignitaries and delegates. Tableaux from all states, union territories and central ministries are displayed. It is a carnival with colourful tableaux and music representing cultural heritage of states. India also displays its military skills with various regiments marching at Rajapth. Aircrafts, submarines are displayed by Air Force, Navy and Army contingents. Also the jawans of BSF, ITBP, Assam Rifles and CRPF march on the beat of rhythm.

U-19 World Cup: Gill, Sharma fifties help India post 265 vs Bangladesh

Despite being tested for the first time in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2018, the Indian-middle order did well to help their team put up a fighting total of 265 in their quarter-final match against Bangladesh at the Queenstown Events Centre, Queenstown on Friday.

Vice-captain Shubman Gill again was in the thick of runs scoring his third consecutive fifty plus score with a well-compiled 86 off 94 deliveries. Skipper Prithvi Shaw scored 40 at the top while allrounder Abhishek Sharma chipped in with 50 off 49 deliveries late in the innings.

For Bangladesh, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was the pick of the bowlers claiming two wickets in his ten overs for just 36 runs, while Qazi Onik claimed three for 48 in his 10. However, keeping in mind that this was the same track in which Australia defended a total 127 in the previous quarter-final, India would be the happier bunch heading in to the break. The track's two -paced nature was very evident right from the start and after losing fellow opener Manjot Kalra for nine in the fourth over of the match, Shaw and Gill combined for an 86-run stand for the second wicket.

Shaw was cautious at first, while Gill took on the role of the aggressor and despite Bangladesh bowlers maintaining a disciplined line, India managed 71 in the first 10 overs. But when it looked Shaw would up the ante medium-pacer Qazi Onik produced a peach of a delivery to get rid of the Indian skipper. Qazi rolled his fingers over and the length ball zipped awat after pitching and despite Shaw getting an edge the ball crashed in to the off stump. Harvik Desai, the wicket-keeper batsman then steady the ship for India with a 48-ball 34. He, along with Gill out on 74 runs for the fourth wicket in 98 deliveries as Bangladesh spinners curtailed the run flow in the middle-overs.

Bangladesh skipper Saif Hassan bowled eight tidy overs for giving away 41 runs while fellow off-break bowler Afif Hossain bowled eight overs for 46 runs. Gill consolidated in the middle and rotated the strike -well. He was strong square of the wicket and played the full-length deliveries through the V. However, Bangladrsh pulled things back. From a healthy 176 for 2, India slumped to 239 for 7. Desai was castled by Nayeem while Gill departed soon after nicking one to wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam.

Abhishek then stepped up to the plate. He first stepped settled in with Riyan Parag (15) and then accelerated when wickets started falling around him. He fell to Hasan Mahmud and three balls later India were all out for 265.

Here is a map to show you how massive this issue has become:

Latest update: At a press conference on Thursday, Haryana Police said that 18 people have been arrested for stone pelting incident in Gurugram.
Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi hit out at the BJP-led NDA government, and said that they (BJP) should be "ashamed of themselves that they continue to play politics over these issues."
Even as protest against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat rages on in various parts of the country, the Delhi High Court refused to entertain pleas against the movie. Contempt pleas against four states have also been filed in the Supreme Court.
A fringe outfit in Kanpur on Wednesday announced a cash reward for anyone chopping off actor Deepika Padukone's nose amid the violence over release of multi-crore film Padmaavat.
"We have collected a bounty of crores of rupees from Kanpurites to be given as reward to anyone who will bring the chopped off nose of Deepika Padukone," fringe group Kanpur Kshatriya Mahasabha president Gajendra Singh Rajawat said.
Big crackdown done as Delhi Police carried out preventive detentions of members of various Fringe groups who were planning to protest against #Padmaavat today. The state police didn't want to take any chances as ASEAN summit is on.
After the attack on a school bus by anti-Padmaavat protestors, some reputed schools in Gurugram have decided to remain shut till Sunday in view of the violence over the controversial film's release.
The schools which have decided to shut down till Sunday includes Pathways school, GD Goenka school, Shiv Nadar school and Delhi Public School.
The management of the schools confirmed that they would close down as a precaution despite the district administration and the Gurugram police assuring adequate security.

Around 25 students of GD Goenka World School were on their way home when a group of around 60 activists, believed to be members of a fringe group, attacked the bus with bamboo sticks asking the driver to stop the vehicle.
"We do not want to take any risk with the life of students. Protection of students outside and inside is our prime concern," a school teacher told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
"If the violators can attack school buses and Haryana roadways buses openly despite prohibitory orders and tight security arrangements of the Gurugram Police," the teacher said, adding, "We cannot take a chance and have decided to close down."
The teacher said that a total of six schools have taken the decision to remain shut.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, in an appeal, said the public transport system of the city should not be disturbed.
"Some people and groups want rioting in the district but we appeal to residents and groups not to violate law and order situation and Section 144 is already imposed in the city," Singh told PTI.
"Everyone has the right to protest but in a peaceful way. Violation of law and order is not allowed. The situation is peaceful in Gurugram and all colleges, schools, offices will remain open on Thursday," he added.
The Gurugram police have arrested 20 people for allegedly violating prohibitory orders, a senior official said.
Gurugram police along with 550 additional forces including local police stations teams have been deployed in the city's major areas including multiplexes, Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khairwar said.
"All Gurugram malls have been directed to tighten their internal security. I along with other senior officers are monitoring the security arrangements in their respective zones," he said.
"The Gurugram Police is on a high alert and various teams are ready to respond quickly in case of any untoward incident," Khairawar said.

Padmaavat' violence: 24 detained, 4 Gurgram schools closed today

GURUGRAM: The mob that attacked school buses and burnt down a Haryana Roadways bus in the city on Wednesday afternoon to stop the screening of 'Padmaavat' was made up mostly of young boys barely 20 years old or a bit older.

TOI saw many of them in school uniform or PT (physical training) dresses as they ran amok on a stretch between the police station at Bhondsi and the Indian Reserve Battallion (IRB) campus. There were only around 60 of them but they managed to hold up the entire highway for three hours by letting loose a sudden burst of violence that caught the police by surprise despite a state of high alert being declared 24 hours ago. Police said 24 alleged protesters were detained.

"There were people who were protesting on the road and the cops were trying to disperse them. Suddenly, the mob came from nowhere and started throwing stones at us," said Pravesh Kumar, who was at the wheel of the GD Goenka school bus (HR55 J3112) and managed to keep driving so that the bus did not become a sitting duck to the mob attack. "The hooligans wanted to set the bus on fire. They tried to torch a tyre. But a few of them were against harming people and didn't let it happen," said Suresh Kumar, an eyewitness.

Neeta Bali, principal of the school, said none the students received injuries. "One of our buses that was moving towards Gurgaon was attacked at Ghamroj by stone-pelters. They damaged the windows. All kids and teachers ducked for cover on the floor. No one was hurt. We immediately called all our buses back. The parents were informed, snacks were given to the kids and they were sent home an hour later," Bali said. "We have decided to keep the school closed on Thursday, seeing the unrest." At least three more Gurgaon schools — Lotus Valley International, Ardee and Shri Ram (Aravali) — also declared Thursday a holiday.

Queued up behind the GD Goenka bus were at least seven more school buses and scores of cars that were stuck in the jam that ensued. These were also targeted by the mob but escaped any major damage. The attack on the lane headed towards Gurgaon city appeared to have been started by a breakaway group that had around 3pm set the Roadways bus — (HR73 7281), coming from Palwal — on fire after forcing all its passengers to get off. When this correspondent followed them and reached the violence spot, some of the youths threatened and heckled her too. They also attacked two fire tenders and a police team coming in their direction, forcing them to turn back.

The mob had managed to set up a roadblock with hay and construction material. They threw stones and glass bottles at every passing vehicle. "I live here. I don't understand what is going on. They are throwing stones at me when I'm trying to go home," a young woman, who said she was a college student, told this correspondent.

The mob was able to run amok because only half a dozen cops were initially present at the site. Reinforcements took a while to arrive because of the blockade and the rioting. Eventually, over 200 cops headed by DCP (south) Ashok Bakshi, Rapid Action Force personnel and Quick Response Teams reached the spot. Police said they fired five rounds in the air to disperse the crowd. By evening, 24 people were detained and 13 of them, several suspected to be minors, named in an FIR filed at Bhondsi police station for rioting, vandalism and various other sections of the IPC.

While the violence was attributed to supporters of a fringe group, the Karni Sena, that has been spearheading protests against Padmaavat, its general secretary Suraj Pal Ammu denied their involvement. "It is unfortunate and we condemn the attacks on people and government machinery. Karni Sena is not involved in any of these as we are against violence. We want to protest peacefully and are using social media to spread the message," said Ammu.

Coming under heavy fire, the Rajput Ekta Foundation also condemned the violence. "This is anti-Rajput propaganda because Rajputs have always acted as bravehearts and not like cowards. We can never indulge in such shameful acts of targeting school children," said Satyendra Singh, its secretary.

"We are probing all the incidents that took place in the city. Overall, the situation is calm," said Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.

In Delhi, a group of Karni Sena supporters smashed the windscreen of a few cars parked on the roadside near a cinema hall in Maurya Enclave in northwest Delhi, while another group created a ruckus near a mall in Prashant Vihar on Wednesday.

A group of miscreants also gathered near Alipur in north Delhi, while another group tried to instigate some school students to stage a protest near Timarpur and managed to block a road for some time.

The first incident was reported around 11am near the PVR Prashant Vihar when a group of 20-25 demonstrators tried to create a ruckus. However, a police team posted near the hall, chased them away.

"We detained a few of them for some time until the others dispersed. They were released later in the evening," said Rajneesh Gupta, DCP, Rohini.

Around 4pm, a group of 100-125 protesters went on a sit-in protest near Rithala Metro station and blocked the road for a while. The third incident was reported from near a PVR cinema hall near Maurya Enclave in northwest Delhi, where a group of miscreants claiming to be from the Karni Sena, smashed the rear windshields of four vehicles parked outside the movie hall. "We have registered a case and are trying to identify the miscreants," said Aslam Khan, DCP, north-west.

Violence at a few places marred the otherwise peaceful screenings of Padmaavat movie in Noida and Ghaziabad amid heightened security around cinemas and on main roads.

Padmaavat movie review: This Deepika Padukone starrer is spectacular

🔊 Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News

Padmavati movie review: Deepika Padukone has never been lovelier. She wears those stunning costumes, never letting them wear her, even if her waist is decorously covered in the Ghoomar song.

Padmaavat movie cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Jim Sarbh, Anupriya Goenka, Raza Murad

Padmaavat movie director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Padmaavat movie rating: 2.5 stars

All those agitating over how Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat would trample all over Rajput pride, you may rest easy: the director didn’t need a memo from the Karni Sena and all the other self-styled ‘armies’ on keeping it ‘sanskaari’ – his entire film is a memo from the Karni Sena and all the other self-styled ‘armies’ on keeping it ‘sanskaari’ – his entire film is a relentlessly opulent, magnificently-mounted paean to Rajput ‘aan baan shaan’.
Here’s how it goes, just in case you are one of those rare people who haven’t been breathlessly following the film’s troubles: the Rajput king Ratan Singh (Kapoor) is the hero, the Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji (Singh) is the villain, and the object of their mutual adoration is the utterly gorgeous Padmavati, who will always and forever be a good Indian girl, and later, wife. When we see her first, she is fleet of foot and clear of eye, a joyous free spirit who has a will of her own.She ends up committing ‘jauhar’, her life and death circumscribed by male notions of honour.
If that’s not patriarchy, then I’m Queen Padmavati, who of course did not exist. And while we of course cannot judge the actions of the dramatis personae who presumably lived in the 13th century (even if they were mythical creatures, created by the poet Malik Mohammad Jayasi) by present day gender roles, we do see that the director has a problem on his hands: how do you show a beautiful queen jumping into a pyre, along with hundreds of her compatriots (a shot has a pregnant woman and a little girl), without glorifying the act?
One way of doing it is to stuff the beginning and the middle acts with so much glitter and glamour that we are expected to be swept away. Which we dutifully do: there’s a kind of beauty in the way Bhansali creates his frames, even if your eye begins to be overwhelmed by it.

Deepika Padukone has never been lovelier. She wears those stunning costumes, never letting them wear her, even if her waist is decorously covered in the Ghoomar song (alert viewers may see a flash of the said body part in other parts of the film). Shahid Kapoor sports kohl in his eyes, and clearly articulated muscles in his chest, often left bare. But this film belongs to Ranveer Singh’s Khilji, who bites into mounds of meat (serving well the prototype of the Muslim savage) and his part with such relish that you can taste it.
If it hadn’t been for the extreme reactions from a bunch of extreme reactionaries-cum-buffoons which nearly derailed the release the film, Bhansali’s latest opus would have been just another Bhansali extravganza, full of costumery and puffery. But given that all art is political, even if it is dressed up art, Padmaavat becomes more than it is, because the director chooses to outline the vileness of his antagonist, and underline the ‘pati-vrata ness’ of Rani Padmavati.
Far from any subtle touches, Bhansali’s black-and-white delineation of the good Hindu and the bad Muslim (who could also, gasp, swing both ways) is so stark that that we are left with no illusion about which part of the political firmament he wants to be on the right side of.
Finally, and we can’t get away from this, the question for us while watching this fresh version of the oldest tale in the book – ‘ek tha raja, ek thi rani, dono mar gaye, khatam kahani’—is, how do we deal with the fact of a woman being forced to jump into a pyre to save the ‘honour’ of her husband, and her people?
🏢*Click Here To For All Technology News*🏢
Of course, Padmaavat is spectacular: no one can do spectacle like Bhansali. This was what he was born to do.
You can easily delight in it while the going is good. But nearly three hours of it, and looping rhetoric around what constitutes Rajput valour can and does become tiresome. And that compulsion to make ‘sati’ so good-looking, when the singeing of flesh can be so gruesome, is troubling.
If there’s one thing that keeps us from brooding too much through the film, it is Ranveer Singh. Not once does he try to make us like him, and that makes us like him even more.
As a performer, he has always been unpredictable, in a good way. As Bhansali’s Khilji, he is electric. And try as anyone might, so is the attraction between the outsider and the queen: it is their doomed love story, whose embers rain on the screen, that we take away with us.
