10 Mobile Apps for the Farmers

Agriculture in India is growing with the introduction of the Green Revolution, the White Revolution, and Golden Revolution and Horticulture Revolutions. Agriculture experts have brought smart farming technologies that enabled them to reduce costs, maximize yields and increase profits. And there is perhaps a no better example of smart farming than with the ‘mobile app’.

There are apps for social networks, banking, travel, health, fitness, news, calendars, games, you name it, there is sure to be an app there for it. The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support the transmission of localized information and services working towards making farming socially, economically and environmentally sustainable, while contributing to the delivery of nutritious and economical food for all – this comprises the Digital Agriculture.
This has also led to the rise and development of mobile apps which are helping existing government schemes and other agriculture-based information to reach farmers in rural India. This digital change is acting as a game-changer for Indian agricultural conditions. Thus, the apps are helping boost overall business performance and reducing negative environmental impacts of farming. Now, with a click of a button, farmers can access information regarding weather, dealers, market prices, plant protection, agro advisories, IPM practices etc. Thus, these advancements will definitely help bring significant change in the lives of farmers and the field of agriculture.

Here are 10 Mobile Apps that has made agriculture easy and more productive for the farmers:

1Kisan Suvidha- Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 to work towards empowerment of farmers and development of villages, the app design is neat and offers a user-friendly interface. It provides information on current weather and also the forecast for the next five days, market prices of commodities/crops in the nearest town, knowledge on fertilizers, seeds, machinery etc. The option to use the app in different languages makes it more widely accessible.
2. Pusa Krishi - The app was also launched in 2016 by the Union Agriculture Minister and aims to help farmers to get information about technologies developed by Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), which will help in increasing returns to farmers. The app also provides farmers with information related to new varieties of crops developed by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), resource-conserving cultivation practices as well as farm machinery and its implementation will help in increasing returns to farmers.

4. Agri Market -Launched along with the Crop Insurance app by the government of India, the app has been developed with an aim to keep farmers abreast of crop prices and discourage them to go for distress sales. Farmers can get information related to prices of crops in markets within 50km of their own device location using the Agri Market Mobile App.
5. ‘Uzhavan’ (meaning - farmer)’ App - This app allows farmers to have access to nine types of services, including details about their crop insurance, information on farm subsidies, book farm equipment and related infrastructure and receiving weather forecast for the next four days.

WhatsApp group video call is LIVE! Check how to use it

One of the most popular messaging application in the world, WhatsApp has brought a new feature that will make your life a lot easy. The update is for both Android users and as well as iOS users.

One of the most popular messaging application in the world, WhatsApp has brought a new feature that will make your life a lot easy. The update is for both Android users and as well as iOS users. With this update, Whatsapp enables a user to have group video calls. Earlier this month, it was announced that the update will be rolled out in a couple of weeks.

With WhatsApp new group video calling feature, you can now add as many as four group members to join a video call on the messaging platform. If you use a smartphone which runs on Android then you should look for the latest update, which is 2.18.145 and ahead. If you are using updated version of WhatsApp then you will have to be “very lucky” to use the new feature. As listed out by popular tipster WaBetaInfo, the feature, even with the updated version of the app doesn’t work. Only a handful of users get to use the new feature. And the new feature cannot be activated with an invitation system.

If you use an Apple device, then look for WhatsApp version 2.18.52 for iOS. However, you need to be very lucky to use the new feature.
How to check if your WhatsApp has this new feature:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp

Step 2: Select a participant you wish to call.

Step 3: Do a normal call.

Step 4: Check if there is a new button “Add participant”

Step 5: If there is, then you can now have group calls if you don’t, then you cannot.

In January this year, WhatsApp confirmed had they are working on a version to enable group video calls. This was confirmed in February that this new feature will be available for the messaging app in ‘future.’ Then at their annual F8 developers’ conference, Facebook mentioned that a bunch of new features will be headed to WhatsApp including support for group video calling in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp Update Brings Status Updates to 'Today View' on iPhones

WhatsApp for iPhone has improved the voice messaging feature

The iPhone update is available for devices running iOS 7.0 and higher

The app recently received a new Change Number feature on Android beta

WhatsApp for iPhone has received an update that brings with a couple of new changes. The app now lets you see recent status updates in the WhatsApp widget in your iPhone's Today View. The WhatsApp for iPhone update also enhances the voice messaging feature that will now continue to play your voice messages if you switch to another app or turn your screen off.

You can avail the changes by downloading the updated (v2.18.40) version of the app for iPhone; it works with devices running iOS 7.0 and later. To recall, last week, the app received a new Android beta version that added a feature to notify contacts on shifting to a new number.

As for the other change that recently made its way to the platform, the new WhatsApp Change Number feature is rolling out through a server-side update to WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.18.97.
We were able to spot the same at the time of filing the story on one of our Android devices. The new addition allows you to notify all contacts, contacts that you've chats with, or any particular contacts you wish, about your having switched from your old number to a new one.
To begin with the new Change Number feature, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Change number. After that, tap the Next button from the top-right corner, enter your old and new phone numbers, tap the Next button again, and then enable the Notify my contacts option. This brings options, namely All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, and Custom. Regardless of selecting any of the three options, all your groups you are part of will be notified. The feature also details the number of contacts who will be notified about your new number

WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' Rendered Ineffective if Your Message Is Quoted

If someone has quoted your message on WhatsApp before you delete it, you will still be able to see that message - rendering the 'Delete for Everyone' feature ineffective.

Last year, WhatsApp rolled out this feature to allow its over one billion user base to revoke messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group. Users can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending.

The Next Web notes that quoted messages in chats continued to show in quotes even after they were wiped. It said that this is not a bug and is a part of the feature.

If a user sends a message and deletes it from a group or individual chat within seven minutes, the message will disappear.

However, if within these seven minutes, that message is quoted then the original message will successfully disappear but the deleted text continues to show in the recipient's quote.

Interestingly, there is no mention of how the feature works in cases of quotes in the WhatsApp's FAQ.

This comes following the reports in which researchers claimed to discover other shortcomings in WhatsApp's implementation of deleted messages.

In one particular flaw - discovered by Spanish tech blog AndroidJefe - it was possible to recover deleted messages from the Android notification history.

"Relying on third-party apps, users could browse the notification log to read purged texts," the report said.

The Independent later pointed out that this approach could only recover deleted messages that were read or interacted with.

WhatsApp Payments UPI-based feature now live in India: How to send your first payment on WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the most widely used messaging service across globe, has started rolling out the UPI-based Payments feature in India which will mean that you will be able to send money to your friends and family right from WhatsApp. WhatsApp is already popular with Indian users across different age groups who love to send "good morning" texts to kick start the day and adding the Payments feature just makes more sense for the messaging app.

The rollout of WhatsApp Payments has started from India which means that the company is looking to end the dominance of apps like Paytm, Google Tez, and other digital wallet app that have been around for a long time. Also read: 10 secret WhatsApp tricks you (probably) didn't know about

With over 200 million monthly active users in India, WhatsApp shouldn't face any trouble bringing its large user base to get a taste of Payments feature. Facebook's move to bring Payments feature to India first on WhatsApp clearly seems a way to cash in on the digital payment in its early days. The WhatsApp Payments feature was being tested as a beta feature with select users but now more users have started receiving the feature. Also read: WhatsApp UPI-based payments feature rolling out in India

It was no secret as WhatsApp was reportedly in talks with top Indian banks for months to integrate Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Unlike previously believed, the WhatsApp Payments feature is being rolled out to both Android as well as iOS users simultaneously.

How to send money using WhatsApp payments

The WhatsApp Payments will be limited to peer-to-peer payment and does not offer merchant payment, as of now.

Before getting started with WhatsApp Payments, users will have to note few things like:

For WhatsApp Payments to work, both sender and receiver should be running the latest WhatsApp version as well as have WhatsApp Payments option enabled.

Another important fact is WhatsApp number should be same as your mobile number linked to your bank account with UPI option support as well.

WhatsApp users who have already received the feature can head to Settings > Payments to start setting up the Payments option. As of now, WhatsApp Payments is working on an invite basis which means those who have received the Payments feature can activate for others by choosing the option from chat.

On tapping the option, users will be welcomed by a new message saying "Send and receive money securely with UPI" and users need to tap on "Accept and Continue" to start accepting the WhatsApp Payments. The users will be also offered the Terms and Privacy policy and the payment provider's terms and privacy policy which they can read or just skip to the next option.

Users then will have to verify their phone numbers by choosing "Verify via SMS" and that can be done by tapping on the green coloured send button on the next screen to send a verification SMS from your phone. It's worth noting that the SMS charges will be applicable.

Once the WhatsApp number has been configured then add your bank from a vast list of over 70 banks. WhatsApp has managed to get all major banks for its new WhatsApp Payments feature on-board which include Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Yes Bank, Airtel Payments Bank, Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda, and more.

If you already have UPI option enabled with your bank then you will need to verify with SMS.

New users need not to worry as WhatsApp Payments offers an option to create a UPI accountwith a pin (much like your ATM pin) for authenticating the payments. This can be done in less than 10 minutes by just following the instructions.

Users need to remember that the WhatsApp number and the mobile number registered with your bank should be same or else you need to get it linked with your bank before proceeding with WhatsApp Payments.

Now, how to send money to a friend using Payments feature on WhatsApp. To start sending money, tap on menu in any chat to access Payment option apart from other options like send photo, video, file, contact, or location.

Choose a WhatsApp contact you want to send your first payment, select the bank account and amount > Enter the UPI Pin > Money sent. One of the biggest highlight of the WhatsApp Payment is it uses UPI to send money in no time.

Once the transaction is complete, WhatsApp also notifies the user about the money sent to a contact. You can also keep a track of Payments from within the app, by using the Payment history option in WhatsApp.

Try the methods above and let us know in the comments section whether the payment went through or not.

Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WhhatsApp in recent times has become like a box of chocolates. You don't know what next is coming out of it. There is small or big change every time you update the app from Play Store. The chat app has come a long way from being just a simple messaging app to becoming so much more. You can today make calls, share location, share files, set Status and do so much more from just one app. WhatsApp Payments is gong to be next one big leap for the company.
The app has 1.5 billion monthly users today and it is all because of the frequent updates pushed by the chat company to continue making the app more engaging. And the Facebook-owned chat app does not want to stop here. The company is planning on to bring some more big updates to its app. There are news all over that the company is bringing features like Payments service, groups calls, private replies and similar more big changes to the app. Many beta users have even started receiving some of these features.
So what are these top most-awaited features of WhatsApp and what will change after these feature go live. Take a look:
1. WhatsApp Payments feature: Paytm, Google Tez and government's own BHIM payment service will soon have a new competition- WhatsApp Payments. WhatsApp plans to go beyond a chat app, it is now aiming to also become a payment service provider.
WhatsApp Payments is a UPI-based payment service from chat app. Many Android and iOS beta users in India have even received the feature on their phones. According to a screenshot shared by WaBetaInfo, the feature will show up inside the WhatsApp Settings. You will be able to make quick bank to bank money transfers without any extra charges via this feature. WhatsApp Payments goes at the top of WhatsApp's most awaited feature list.
2. WhatsApp Group calls: Introducing group calls to WhatsApp's voice and video calls is going to be the second big feature from the app. WaBetaInfo reports that chat app is working to bring group calls to its voice and video calls. Currently, you can make voice or video calls to only contact at a time. This feature will allow you to add more people to voice calls just like the conference calls and Messenger-like group video calls.
3. Shake to report: Last year we saw several blackouts of WhatsApp. The chat app has finally realised the problem and is working on a Shake to report feature. The feature is yet to roll out.
4. Private replies: In future you will not have to leave a group chat to reply someone privately. The chat app is working on this feature. It will allow you to reply to someone privately in a group chat. However, the admin of the group will be able to see it.
5. Tap to unblock: Small but a significant feature-- Tap to unblock -- will allow you to unblock a blocked contact by simply tapping on it. The current process to unblock a contact requires you to go inside the contact and then tap on unblock option.
WhatsApp on New Year's Eve: 20 Billion Messages Sent in India, 75 Billion Worldwide
WhatsApp says this is the highest-ever user activity on a single day
Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News
More than 13 billion images, 5 billion videos were shared worldwide
Interestingly, WhatsApp suffered an outage late on New Year’s eve
WhatsApp users in India sent over 20 billion messages on December 31 as they ushered in 2018 with wishes to family and friends. In a release, WhatsApp revealed that of the 75 billion messages shared on New Year’s Eve, 20 billion were just from India. These figures the highest-ever number of messages shared on the platform, which has over 1 billion users worldwide and counts India as its biggest market with 200 million users. It is notable that WhatsApp suffered an outage lasting more than an hour late on December 31, 2017 and in the early hours from January 1, 2018.
In a statement, WhatsApp said the 75 billion messages sent worldwide included more than 13 billion images and 5 billion videos. The company says it recorded this data is only for 12am to 11:59pm PST on December 31.
While this data represents huge volume and user activity on the platform, WhatsApp disappointed many in India when it went down as the clock struck midnight on January 1. The service went down across the country and users were unable to send messages to their loved ones for more than an hour. At the time, no reason for the outage was given by the company, which only said, “WhatsApp users around the world experienced a brief outage today that has now been resolved.”
In 2017, the Facebook-owned app introduced a number of new features and changes to the platform. These include the option to delete sent messages, arguably the biggest new feature since the blue ticks were introduced. Similarly, there were features such as the all-new Statuslive location sharing, etc. to keep users engaged. However, co-founder Brian Acton also left WhatsApp in 2017 to “start a non-profit focused at the intersection of nonprofit, technology and communications.”
WhatsApp stops working on BlackBerry, Windows Phone 8 and older platforms
Messaging platform WhatsApp will now be unavailable to users operating Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS as well as old Android phones.
Facebook-owned mobile messaging app WhatsApp has stopped working on smartphones that support ‘BlackBerry OS’, ‘BlackBerry 10’, ‘Windows Phone 8.0’ and older platforms in the New Year.
“These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” a spokesperson wrote in a support note on the company’s website.
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp,” it said. Users would be able to use WhatsApp but would not be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts.
“Because we will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time,” WhatsApp said. WhatsApp would also end support for NokiaS40 after December 31, 2018 and Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020.
“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use,” the company said. “If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone to continue using WhatsApp,” it added.
WhatsApp to Stop Working on BlackBerry 10 OS, Windows Phone 8.0 on December 31
WhatsApp won't work on BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone 8.0 come year-end
There appear to be no extensions of previous announcements
WhatsApp will stop working on Nokia S40 on December 31, 2018
WhatsApp's farewell note for 2017 is not good news for some smartphone users. WhatsApp will stop working on devices running BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older from December 31, 2017. The WhatsApp blog post with end-of-life dates clearly mentions that users of BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older operating systems will not be able to use the app after December 31, 2017 - less than a week from now.
To recall, WhatsApp had extended support for both platforms in June this year. At the time, WhatsApp had also revealed that the app will stop working for phones running Nokia S40 will be stopped from December 31, 2018. The app will stop working on phones running Android 2.3.7 and older (Gingerbread) will be stopped from February 1, 2020. The messaging app became unavailable on Nokia phones running Symbian S60, from June 30, 2017.
Ending support for Blackberry and Windows Phone has seen no further extensions and will come into place on the mentioned date. If your phone has any of the two specified operating systems, you should consider upgrading to a newer phone in order to access WhatsApp properly. WhatsApp updates for other OS versions like Windows Phone 7, Android 2.1, Android 2.2, and iOS 6 were stopped in 2016.
WhatsApp, earlier this month, officially took covers off its new standalone app for businesses, which features both verified and non-verified profiles. This gives businesses a formal route to conduct business on the messaging app.
WhatsApp Verified Profiles: Business Account Features Detailed in New FAQ
New FAQ listing shows WhatsApp Business app is in developmentWhatsApp earlier said to extend its app for businessesThe WhatsApp Business will have a redesigned app icon
WhatsApp seems set to launch a standalone app for businesses, which will feature both verified and non-verified profiles. In a new FAQ published on its website, WhatsApp has detailed the Business accounts, including key features and how to distinguish between verified and non-verified profiles.
 In Asia, organisations have been using WhatsApp as an informal means of coordinating with their clients and customers for the past few years due to the massive popularity of the app. Earlier this year, the Android beta version got the Verified Profiles feature that allowed businesses (with accounts featuring a tick mark as a sign of authentication) to communicate with users.
The Facebook-owned company says in the FAQ, "While chatting with businesses, you can check your contact's profile to see which type of account they're using. A verified account has a green checkmark badge in its profile." It adds, "A business account with a grey question mark badge in its profile means the account is using the WhatsApp Business app but hasn't been confirmed nor verified by WhatsApp
The much talked-about Business app is currently being tested by a private group of testers and the company will introduce it as WhatsApp Business - a standalone app.
Its description available on Play Store read: "As a test partner for 'WhatsApp Business', you have early access to a wide range of new features that we've built with you in mind. As you experiment with what this new app has to offer, please share your experiences with us so that we can improve the product."
WhatsApp Business is different from the regular WhatsApp. The logo of the app has been changed from the calling symbol to 'B' inside the green conversation bubble. However, after downloading, the app looks the same as WhatsApp, barring the title bar that says WhatsApp Business. The app has interesting features such as auto responses, creating a business profile, chat migration, and analytics.
"We also provide you with the tools you need to control your experience with businesses. You can block business accounts and report them as spam at any time, right within the chat," WhatsApp said in the new FAQ.
Before launching the standalone Business app, the new FAQ, first spotted by the fan website WABetaInfo, aims to clear doubts so that no such fake app gets downloaded.
WhatsApp’s ‘Restricted Groups’ feature may allow group admins to silence members
WhatsApp is testing a new 'Restricted Groups' feature which will give the group administrator more powers.
WhatsApp is testing a new ‘Restricted Groups’ feature which will give the group administrator more powers. According to a report from WABetaInfo, the messaging platform has submitted the “Restricted Groups” setting via Google Play Beta programme in the version 2.17.430.
Essentially, the new feature promises to give the administrator more power in a group chat. The report said that the administrator is free to restrict a member from sending text messages, photographs, GIFs, or voice messages. Once restricted, you can use the ‘Message Admin’ button to send a message to the group.  You will be able to send message to the administrator of the group, who will ultimately decide whether it will be seen by other members of the group – or rejected completely.
The Restricted group feature can be enabled by anyone with an administrator authority within the group chat. The settings can be changed every 72 hours, meaning group members can be silenced for a few hours at a time.
WABetaInfo, which tracks upcoming WhatsApp features wrote: “WhatsApp will prevent the group creator to be deleted from the group by other administrators. This will help the group creator to have the full control of the group.· The administrators will be able to choose if other participants can modify the subject of the group, its icon and its description.”
The feature is currently supported by Android and iOS beta, but WhatsApp has disabled it on its servers. At the moment, WhatsApp group administrator has the authority to add new members to the group. Members are free to post anything in the group.
WhatsApp Reportedly Letting Users Delete Sent Messages: How It Works
WhatsApp message delete/ recall feature has been in the rumour mill for nearly a year now, with the company mentioning it in the internal code. But fans will be pleased to know that the feature, which had not made an official appearance so far, has started trickling out to some WhatsApp users. WABetainfo now reports that the new feature, named 'Delete for Everyone', has started rolling out to some users on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone apps. It only works if both the recipient and sender have the latest version of WhatsApp installed, the site notes, and it also works on Web version.
  • How to use WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' feature
The feature is said to be one of the most requested one, and is likely to make things slightly easier for WhatsApp users. The report says that it will be called 'Delete for Everyone' and several users have started noticing the feature in the latest WhatsApp version when they press the trash icon. Alongside Delete for Everyone, users will also see the Delete for Me option, if they only want to delete the message from their phone.
It adds that the rollout is slow and it may take some time. As we already mentioned, the feature will only work for both the parties if the sender and recipient are using the latest WhatsApp version. The feature is said to work for all kinds of messages on the most widely used instant messaging app. The report says it will work for all texts, images, videos, GIFs, voice messages, contact, files, location, quoted message, and status replies on WhatsApp.
It also only works within 7 minutes of sending the message - after that, the message can't be recalled. Deleted messages will be replaced by "This message was deleted for everyone." Based on the initial report, the sent message will be deleted from the chat page as well as from the notifications pane. For those unaware, the recall feature is already available in other popular chat apps like Telegram, Viber, and others, and WhatsApp is finally looking to make it available to its billion daily active users as well.
WABetainfo notes that WhatsApp at the moment does not recall a message contained in a quoted message. Messages cannot be deleted for everyone if they are sent in a broadcast list. It also adds that messages will not be deleted on the Symbian app, so those users will continue to see the recalled message. The site adds that in its current implementation, WhatsApp will not notify the user that the message has been deleted.
After several weeks of testing, Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram has rolled out a new feature which enables users to broadcast simultaneously with a friend. “Starting today, we are introducing a fun way to go live with a friend.
“Starting today, we are introducing a fun way to go live with a friend. Now, you can hang out and go live together, whether you’re just doing homework or catching up on your day,” Instagram said in a blog post on Tuesday.
To use the new feature, users need to tap the new icon on the bottom right and tap “Add” to invite anyone who’s currently watching. Once they join, “you’ll see the screen split into two and your friend pop up right below you”, Instagram said. Users can also remove their guest and add someone else at any time. They can also choose to exit on their own.
When someone you follow is going live with a friend, you will see two circles stacked together in your stories bar.
You can tap on it to watch and like and comment as you follow along, the blog added. After Instagram introduced live video last November, millions of people have used it to connect with friends and followers in an authentic way. Second-hand mobile phone market still offers a first class bargain in India
Across India, millions of users still buy second-hand phones because they would rather use an old phone with the features they need than settle for a new phone with lower specs.
Across India, millions of users still buy second-hand phones because they would rather use an old phone with the features they need than settle for a new phone with lower specs. Along with affordability, the shorter upgrade cycles of smartphones these days are also fuelling a demand for used phones. In most cases the prices difference is huge, even if the phone has been used sparingly by the original buyer. The supply side is fed by those who want to upgrade as soon a new phone that catches their eye is announced — this means selling their existing phone for whatever it is worth and moving on to a new one.
“The quality of mid-range and premium devices in past year or so has improved significantly. But since these devices are priced high, they are out of reach for many low and mid range consumers. Considering the quality of these devices, they work very well even after a year of usage, hence the demand for these devices is increasing amongst the low and mid range consumers in the used phone space,” Navkendar Singh, Associate Research Director – Client Devices and IPDS : India & South Asia, IDC India, told Aapkasamachar.com over mail.
Singh says used phones are attracting a lot of first-time smartphone users who are upgrading from a feature phone. These people basically want to experience video, data, and content. Instead of buying an expensive smartphone, they end up buying a used smartphone which fits perfectly in their budget.
“There is a certain segment of consumers who like to replace their phone every six to eight months to enjoy latest technology and specifications, and also as a status symbol. This is leading to increased supply of used phones in the market,” Singh added.
A few years back, the only way to get a second-hand smartphone was through the grey market. Every big city in India has a grey market of its own; Delhi has Gaffar Market, Mumbai has Heera Panna, Kolkata has Fancy Market, and Chennai has Burma Bazaar. Since the market for second-hand smartphones has expanded a lot, there are now different digital platforms (including e-commerce sites) to buy and sell second-hand smartphones. One of the leaders in the space, OLX, claims it processed half of the 4 million pre-owned mobile phones sold online in India in 2016-17.
The second-hand devices market it split into two: the first being local retailers and the second the refurbished market where phones are tested and repaired before being resold. Refurbished phones come with a minimum guarantee, usually six months, but command a premium in comparison to the grey market.
“The average replacement cycle for smartphones has shortened to less than two years. More than 65 per cent of Quikr users are selling their phones in less than two years. Around 35 per cent within one year. Therefore they opt for getting something which is as good as new,” Sarath Chandra Gudlavalleti, VP, QuikrBazaar, told indanexpress.com. As per the online classifiedmarket site, Xiaomi, Lenovo and OnePluscontinue to show the highest growth in the marketplace, while Apple has the most aspirational value.
Nitin Kochhar, Head Categories, ShopClues, believes the growing smartphone penetration in india and decrease in product life cycle has led to the growth in used devices business in India. Kochhar says consumers see a great value in second-hand phones which are available for less than the price of a new phone. Currently, on ShopClues, the most popular used smartphone brands are Xiaomi, Lenovo and Samsung.
Meanwhile, Hitendra Chaturvedi, Founder and CEO, GreenDust, says the entire definition and user perception of an “old phone” has changed. According to Chaturvedi, consumers really don’t care even if the phone is a six-month-old device. For them, a 50 per cent discount on the phone sounds like a real good bargain.
Greendust, which offers second-hand smartphones, claims both Apple and Samsung continue to be the most popular brands in the used device segment in India, with demand remaining consistently high across the past several quarters. These brands are closely followed by smartphones from Moto, OnePlus and Xiaomi which have also displayed steady growth.
Unorganised retail market continues to be popular for used smartphones
At Delhi’s Gaffar Market, a popular den for imported devices, the second-hand smartphone business is booming. Young adults, especially from the adjoining areas of Delhi, in their mid-20s continues to flock the oldest grey market in Delhi to buy used smartphones. The demand for Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s is peaking while Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the popular choice among Android fans.
One retailer said the demand for second-hand phones have been stable and it is the price that matters and not how new the model is. A quick survey of the market revealed what is pulling in the customers. A 16GB Apple iPhone 6, now priced around Rs 22,999 on Amazon India, can be purchased for as little as Rs 12,000 here. For those who bargain, the price can go lower. Although there is no warranty on the iPhone 6, a bit of haggling can get you a seven-day warranty, good enough to figure out if the phone has any major issues.
Being predominantly in the unorganised sector, there is no way to quantify the used smartphone market in India. By rough calculations, unorganised retail still dominates and the online channels are unlikely to be more than a third of the volume. The popularity of the former is driven by the window to discuss the device and negotiate a price before the transaction. This is not an option online. Also, the transactions are instant, especially while selling and there is no hassle waiting for the phone to be picked up and valued.
Used smartphones might help OEMs in the long run
“The used phone market will continue to appeal to consumers looking for options in the mid to premium segment, looking for experiencing a flagship model from Apple, Samsung or Google, but cannot afford a newly launched model,” IDC’s Singh added. ShopClues’ Kochhar points out that even though they are independent universe, a lot of OEMs will start to acknowledge the used phone market and use this to increase sales through exchange programmes and buybacks.
GreenDust’s Chaturvedi believes OEMs will be impacted in the long run, but will still benefit from the rising popularity of used phones. “The market for refurbished, surplus, opened box or used phones allow users to afford expensive phones, try them out and eventually buy a new phone. In essence, users are basically able to test out an expensive phone of a brand without having to bear so much cost and eventually graduate to a new phone, the next time,” Chaturvedi added.
Buying a second-hand smartphone? Here is the rider
Buying a second-hand smartphone has its advantages, but users should avoid getting scammed. Often users get fooled by a fake device and in some cases, they end buying a stolen phone. The internet is flooded with unfortunate stories about people who bought a used phone only to know they were duped by a seller. One should obviously check the condition of a used phone, but try not to get lured by lower prices as you might get a dud.
There are other security risks when buying a used smartphone. In 2016, Norton by Symantec identified 6,464,472 new pieces of malware apps and 5,741,834 new pieces of greyware – apps with potential privacy issues or intrusive behaviors.
“Despite the growing threat and awareness of cybercrime, consumers remain complacent about protecting their personal information. It is imperative that the second-hand device owners take control of their personal information. Given that smartphone they are receiving is likely to go through factory re-set, the basic hygiene and security software update is much advised. Also, if there is an OS update available, they should prioritise the same,” Ritesh Chopra, Country Manager, Consumer Business Unit, Symantec, told Aapkasamachar.com
