Live updates: Maharashtra bandh today; state on edge after violence, protests

Maharashtra remained on edge after the anniversary of a battle fought 200 years ago brought to fore simmering caste tensions even as a statewide bandh called today to protest the state government's alleged failure to stop violence witnessed stray protest by Dalits.

Traffic Update: Citizens find it difficult to book Ola and Uber cabs amid protests and rail roko at many places in Mumbai suburbs. Cab aggregators charge hefty amount for rides.

The bus service towards Pune's Baramati and Satara and inter-state bus services from Karnataka-Maharashtra have been temporarily suspended till further order as a precautionary measure.

To prevent further damage the administration has also suspended internet services in Aurangabad.

Rajya Sabha was abruptly adjourned today till noon as several opposition members, including those from the Congress and BSP, sought to raise the issue of caste violence in Maharashtra.

Commuters have been left stranded due to lack of mode of transport in the state today. Scores of people were witnessed waiting near Thane's Vartak Nagar.

Commuters are advised to avoid Kalanagar & MMRDA Junction for some time due to Rasta roko.

Metro services between Ghatkopar and Airport Road station temporarily affected; running normal between Airport Road and Versova; expected to resume in the next 15 minutes.

Railway tracks have been evacuated and train operations have resumed at Nallasopara/Virar from 10.30 hrs.
Mumbai Dabbawala association on Tuesday decided not to run its delivery service, fearing the law and order issues in the city.

Confirming the news, Association head Subhash Talekar said means of transportation difficult for delivery of tiffins on time during bandh .

Groups of Dalit activists jumped on the railway tracks, shouting slogans and waving flags to attempt a rail-blockade at Thane and Virar stations in Palghar, but were prevented by the security forces.

In Mumbai, colleges and schools opened as usual but schoolbuses stayed off roads as a precaution. One private school bus was stoned in Chembur but there were no injuries.

Though many taxi-auto rickshaw unions have supported the shutdown, the city's lifeline, the suburban trains and the BEST (Bombay Electric Supply And Transport) buses services were plying near-normally.

Today's Class 11 exams at St Xavier's College in South Mumbai have been cancelled, college authorities said.

Two film-related events scheduled for Wednesday here were cancelled due to the Maharashtra shutdown called by some Dalit parties.

"Due to Maharashtra bandh today, we have decided to push our 'My Birthday Song' trailer release to tomorrow January 4, 2018. Thank you," tweeted the movie's producer and actor Sanjay Suri.

Even a song launch event for "Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety" was cancelled "owing to the current situation in the city".

Section 144 has been imposed in Maharashtra's Thane area till midnight of January 4, in the wake of the statewide band called by the dalit outfits, protesting against the Bhima-Koregaon violence.

The protestors even halted the trains at Thane railway station pertaining to the same.

"Few protestors tried to disrupt railway services at Thane, but were immediately cleared by RPF and GRP officials. Services are running uninterrupted on Central Railway as of now" says Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Central Railway.

Huge security forces have been deployed in Ghatkopar's Ramabai Colony and Eastern Express Highway to keep a check on any case of violence.

Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) leader and Dr B R Ambedkar's grandson Prakash Ambedkar have called for Maharashtra bandhtoday to protest the state government's "failure" to stop the violence at Bhima Koregaon village in Pune district two days ago.

Ambedkar alleged that Hindu Ekta Aghadi was responsible for the violence.

In Pune, cases were registered by the Pimpri police against Milind Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide, who head the Hindu Ekta Aghadi and Shivraj Pratishthan respectively, for allegedly inciting the violence. The two organisations had opposed the celebration of "British victory" in the battle.

Mumbai Police detained more than 100 people over different locations in relation to violence. Jet Airways, Air India have waived off cancellation charges from Mumbai due to ongoing volatile situation in the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Bombay High Court into the Pune violence, and appealed for calm. He said it needed to be ascertained if there was a conspiracy behind yesterday's violence.

Fadnavis said a Rs 10 lakh compensation would be given to kin of the youth killed and his death would be probed by the CID.

BSP Supremo Mayawati blamed BJP for the violence.

Rahul Gandhi also slammed BJP-RSS for 'fascist anti-dalit vision'.

Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani appealed for peace.

Local train services on the Harbour line were affected between Chembur and Govandi as the protesters blocked the railway tracks.

Maharashtra state transport buses were also attacked. A total 134 MSRTC buses were damaged during today's violence.

The central railway had to suspended suburban services between Kurla and Vashi on its harbour corridor and ran a special services between CSMT-Kurla and Vashi-Panvel section.

As a precautionary measure, schools were shut in Mumbai.

One person was killed on Monday when the the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Bhima-Koregaon battle in Pune district turned violent. The clash broke our between villagers from Koregaon Bhima, Pabal and Shikrapur and a large group of people celebrating the January 1, 1818, victory of British troops over Peshwa Bajirao II's army in Koregaon Bhima.

Dalit leaders commemorate the British victory, as it is believed that soldiers from the Mahar community -- then considered untouchable -- were part of the East India Company's forces.

However, some right-wing groups in Pune had expressed opposition to the celebrations of the "British victory". The violence had erupted after a local group and some members of the crowd on its way to the memorial had an argument over some issues.

Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, has announced a state-wide bandh tomorrow as a protest against the police inaction.

"Request will be made to SC for judicial inquiry in Koregaon violence matter and CID inquiry will also be conducted on the death of the youth. 10 lakh compensation for victim's kin," Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said.

Reliance JioPhone listed on Amazon: Better to stick with offline for this 4G feature phone?

Reliance JioPhone, which could previously be ordered via Jio's official website or MyJio app online, is now listed on Amazon India.

Here's why it is a good idea to buy the device offline.

Reliance JioPhone, which could previously be ordered via Jio’s official website or MyJio app online, is now listed on Amazon India.
The 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone was launched at an effective price of Rs 0, though people need to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 for purchasing the device. On Amazon, the JioPhone is priced at Rs 1,745
plus Rs 49 delivery charges, which is slightly higher than the original price. The official reseller is Gadget Geek Business Solution.

However, for those interested in getting the JioPhone, it is actually better to buy the device from authorised Jio retailers or other leading mobile retail stores across India, given they’ll not be charged extra. Also with regard to details of refunds, activating the SIM, an offline store will likely offer more clarity on these aspects which are crucial in the JioPhone and its overall pricing.

Interestingly, Jio’s official website hasn’t yet resumed pre-bookings for the phone, even though it is available via offline channels. Meanwhile, the company has said that it will announce the next JioPhone booking date soon. The JioPhone reseller on Amazon India is not an authorised seller from Jio, though some of the comments indicate the phone was actually delivered to customers.
For those who still need a feature phone, the JioPhone comes at en effective price of Rs 0. The security deposit of Rs 1,500 will be refunded to users after three years on return of the device in working condition. However, Jio has attached a number of terms and conditions on when this exact deposit will be returned and users should keep those in mind. Also the JioPhone only works with a Jio SIM card and people can’t use SIM cards from other telecom companies like Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, etc.

Reliance Jio has a couple of data plans for JioPhone users, which includes a Rs 153 monthly pack as well as Rs 24 and Rs 54 sachet packs.
With Jio’s Rs 153 plan, users will get 500MB data per day for 28 days along with unlimited voice calls and SMS. The Rs 24 and Rs 54 plans offer the same benefits but with a day’s and a week’s validity respectively.

JioPhone is a low-cost 4G handset, which was unveiled by the company in July. It comes with smart features like 4G VoLTE connectivity, a voice assistant, and support for company’s apps that come pre-loaded on the device. JioPhone gets a 2.4-inch QVGA display and it runs KaiOS.
The single-SIM phone has a SD card slot, a USB port for charging, speaker, FM Radio, torchlight, and SOS option. Reliance JioPhone features a 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera. It is powered by a dual-core SPRD 9820A/QC8905 processor,
coupled with 512MB RAM and 4GB storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card.
The JioPhone is backed by a 2000 mAh battery.

WhatsApp stops working on BlackBerry, Windows Phone 8 and older platforms

Messaging platform WhatsApp will now be unavailable to users operating Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS as well as old Android phones.

Facebook-owned mobile messaging app WhatsApp has stopped working on smartphones that support ‘BlackBerry OS’, ‘BlackBerry 10’, ‘Windows Phone 8.0’ and older platforms in the New Year.

“These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” a spokesperson wrote in a support note on the company’s website.

“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp,” it said. Users would be able to use WhatsApp but would not be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts.

“Because we will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time,” WhatsApp said. WhatsApp would also end support for NokiaS40 after December 31, 2018 and Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020.

“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use,” the company said. “If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone to continue using WhatsApp,” it added.

SoftBank succeeds in tender offer for Uber shares

SoftBank and the rest of the consortium, which includes Dragoneer Investment Group, will own approximately 17.5 percent of Uber, a person familiar with the matter said.

A consortium led by SoftBank Group Corp will buy a large number of shares of Uber Technologies Inc in a deal that values the ride-services firm at $48 billion, Uber said on Thursday, in a victory for new Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi. The price is a roughly 30 percent discount to Uber’s most recent valuation of $68 billion. The deal will trigger a number of changes in the way the board oversees the company, which is dealing with federal criminal probes, a high-stakes lawsuit and an overhaul of its workplace culture.

SoftBank and the rest of the consortium, which includes Dragoneer Investment Group, will own approximately 17.5 percent of Uber, a person familiar with the matter said. That stake includes a share purchase, through a tender offer, from earlier investors and employees at the $48 billion valuation, as well as a $1.25 billion investment of fresh funding at the $68 billion level. Uber said the deal will close early next year. On Thursday it said that existing investors had agreed to sell enough shares for SoftBank to go through with the transaction.

SoftBank itself will keep a 15 percent stake, while the rest of the consortium will own approximately 3 percent, according to a second person familiar with the matter. Private equity group TPG was part of the consortium of buyers, a source familiar with the matter said.

Khosrowshahi, who took the top job in August after Travis Kalanick was forced to step down in June, helped negotiate the deal. Uber is losing more than $1 billion each quarter, and a new cash infusion is critical. The company is also planning an initial public offering in 2019. Uber will use the investment “to support our technology investments, fuel our growth, and strengthen our corporate governance,” a spokesperson, who declined to be named, said. When the deal is completed, the company will make governance changes, expanding Uber’s board from 11 to 17 members including four independent directors, limiting some early shareholders’ voting power and cutting the control wielded by Kalanick, who remains on the board and is still one of the largest stakeholders.

‘SMART THING’
“The stockholders did the smart thing. The price is less important than locking in the governance changes and securing the support of the world’s most powerful technology investor,” said Erik Gordon an entrepreneurship expert at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Rajeev Misra, chief executive of SoftBank’s Vision Fund, a $98 billion tech investment vehicle, will join the Uber board, The Wall Street Journal reported.
SoftBank will get two seats on the expanded board, a source told Reuters.
Misra said in a statement that SoftBank has “tremendous confidence in Uber’s leadership and employees.” Uber board members agreed in early November to governance changes to pave the way for the SoftBank deal. Some initial investors in the consortium, including General Atlantic, dropped out over disagreement about the price offered to shareholders,
Reuters previously reported. SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has taken a keen interest in ride-hailing companies around the world, and already has sizeable stakes in China’s Didi, Brazil-based 99, India’s Ola and Singapore Grab, all of which have competed with Uber. Didi last week raised $4 billion, including some investment from SoftBank.
The Uber investment comes after a year of troubles for the company, including a lawsuit by Alphabet Inc’s self-driving car unit Waymo that alleges trade-secrets theft and federal investigations that span possible bribery of foreign officials in Asian countries and the use of software to evade regulators. Over the past year, a former employee’s charges of endemic sexual harassment led to an internal review, London said it is stripping Uber of its license and Uber revealed it had covered up a major hack.
Venture capital firms Benchmark, which owns 13 percent of Uber, had indicated that it would sell a portion of its shares, SoftBank said last month. Menlo Ventures, another large shareholder, would tender shares, Managing Director Shawn Carolan said at the time. Carolan on Thursday praised the deal without describing Menlo’s participation. Benchmark did not respond to a request for comment.

I&B ministry dealt with several controversial issues in 2017

Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News

Controversy also erupted after two films "S Durga" and "Nude" were dropped from screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) even after the jury recommended that they be shown at the annual event

Uproar over the release of period drama “Padmavati” and two films not screened at IFFI were some of the issues the Information & Broadcasting Ministry had to deal with in 2017, which also saw several appointments including that of Prasoon Joshi as censor board chief. The ministry was also in the headlines for its advisory on condom advertisements on television.

In a move that surprised many, the Narendra Modi government allocated the I&B portfolio to the then Textile Minister Smriti Irani, who was shifted out of the human resource development ministry only last year in the backdrop of controversies surrounding her educational qualification, Hyderabad University Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide and alleged anti-India slogans at Jawaharlal NehruUniversity.

The portfolio of I&B fell vacant after M Venkaiah Naidu was chosen as the NDA nominee for the vice presidential elections. Irani was the fourth minister to be at the helm of affairs of the important ministry since the Modi government took over in 2014. Prior to Naidu, Arun Jaitley was the information and broadcasting minister, replacing Prakash Javadekar.

The government appointed actor Anupam Kher as the new chief of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He replaced Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as head of the Pune-based institute. The year also saw Pahlaj Nihalani, whose stint as the head of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was surrounded by controversy, being replaced by noted songwriter-poet Joshi. The ministry reconstituted the existing censor board with actress Vidya Balan being among the new members.

The year saw a full-blown controversy over the film “Padmavati” with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh joining the chorus against its release. There were widespread protests by Rajput community alleging that the film breached the honour of queen Padmini and distorted facts.
Controversy also erupted after two films “S Durga” and “Nude” were dropped from screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) even after the juryrecommended that they be shown at the annual event. The censor board ordered a re-examination of Sanal Kumar Sasidharans film “S Durga”, derailing its court-ordered screening at IFFI.
The bone of contention seemed to be the hashtag that follow the letter “S” in the revised title of the movie, which was earlier named “Sexy Durga”. The CBFC said the makers cannot exhibit the film further until the board reexamines it, adding a suitable date and time will be conveyed to the makers soon. The Kerala High Court had directed the I&B ministry to screen the film at IFFI.
The ministry was also in the news for issuing an advisory to all television channels, asking them to restrict airing of condom advertisements to slots between 10 pm and 6 am, triggering a controversy. In an official memorandum, the ministry later said, the advisory only pertained to sexually-explicit content being used to market certain condom brands which titillate the audience from a PR perspective.
The year also saw appointment of actor Anupam Kher as the chairman of the FTII, replacing Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as head of the Pune-based institute. His term had ended in March. Veteran journalist A Surya Prakash was appointed as the chairman of the Prasar Bharati board for a second consecutive term till February 8, 2020, when he turns 70.
Shashi S Vempati, a part-time member of the Prasar Bharati Board, was made the Chief Executive Officer of the public broadcaster, succeeding Rajeev Singh, member (finance) of the board, who was serving as the interim CEO after S C Panda retired earlier this year. New category of visa for foreign filmmakers was also created to ease issues related to their entry into the country.

A separate 24×7 DD channel for Jharkhand was announced during the year. DD Bihar was asked to telecast DD Ranchi programmes till the launch of its own 24×7 channel. In 2017, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) website got a new look with enhanced features while a new portal of DD News was also launched.

The Union Cabinet approved auctioning of more than 680 FM channels in 236 cities, including those in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, where the population is less than one lakh. In December, the ministry ordered an Assamese television channel to go off air for three days and a Gujarati channel for a day for violating the cable television network rules.

Senior Indian Administrative Service officer N K Sinha was appointed as the new secretary in the ministry after the transfer of Ajay Mittal as Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
