Amitabh Bachchan pens poignant tribute to Shashi Kapoor

Join our :- Telegram Channal Latest News

In his blog, Amitabh Bachchan described a picture of Shashi Kapoor on a film magazine cover just before his Bollywood debut, and admitted that looking at the "terribly handsome" man, he thought he stood no chance in the industry.

Iconic is the only word that comes to the mind when one thinks about Yash Chopra’s Deewar and its scene between two of India’s greatest acting stars – Amitabh Bachchanand Shashi Kapoor – where they wage a war of words and emotions with each other. But even as the they played two siblings turned against one another, the audience could only notice the ease, the comfort and a natural chemistry between the actors on screen.

Luckily, that camaraderie made its way on the big screen repeatedly throughout the 1970s-80s – Suhaag, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhie, Namak Halal – to name a few. But not many, particularly the current generation, knew a lot about the real life friendship, that how even long after Kapoor bid adieu to the arclights, the warmth between the two actors lived and grew.

So, as Kapoor breathed his last on Monday evening, it was natural of Amitabh Bachchan, four years younger than his frequent co-star, to reach his residence at the earliest and spend hours with the family. And it was after some time with the Kapoor family that Amitabh sat down to pen a moving tribute to the actor.

The megastar begins his post (on his blog) by describing a picture of Kapoor on a film magazine cover just before his Bollywood debut, and admitting that looking at the “terribly handsome” man, Amitabh Bachchan thought he stood no chance in the industry.

“Standing elegantly without a care in the world, I saw him standing by a Mercedes Sports car, a convertible, a smart trimmed beard and moustache, adorning involuntarily, the face of this incredibly handsome man.

It was a picture that filled almost an entire page of a magazine. Shashi Kapoor … son of Prithviraj Kapoor, younger brother to Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, making a debut in a forthcoming film, is what the caption read .. And I said to myself, as very uncertain thoughts raced through my mind of wanting to become a film actor, that, with men like him around, I stood no chance at all…,” the post begins.

He, then, goes on to describe his meeting with Kapoor and the biggest takeaway from that meet – always introduce yourself. Amitabh Bachchan says while people find this quality impressive in him but he can’t take credit for it as he imbibed it from the veteran star.

“1969, and those early years of efforts to join the Industry were also the times when there was a close proximity, to the area of an atmosphere, that swivelled around this most attractive man. On and off, common friends in the Industry, which I was just getting acquainted with, would introduce me to him at select social gatherings.

‘Shashi Kapoor!’ was what one heard as he extended a warm soft hand out to you in introduction; that devastating smile complimenting the twinkle in his eyes. He needn’t have done so. Every one knew him. But this was his infectious humble self.

When he spoke, there was a mischievous, gentle, almost inaudible, delicate, yodel, in his voice – most endearing and comforting to the one he was introduced to. The self introduction habit was a gem.

The one being introduced to, was, quite obviously, prompted to say his or her name as well, when they heard his. It was a remarkable tool to come to know the other persons name .. and .. if and when there was to be another meeting after many forgettable years, the same technology was most helpful in remembering the other persons name, in case you had forgotten it..!!” Big B writes.

In an endearing portion from the post, the actor shares that he went for a haircut – that involved the hair covering his ears – only after taking inspiration from Shashi Kapoor, whose hairstyle was emulated by men around the country.

The next .. was his semi curly hair on head, falling carelessly over his forehead and ears, not quite covering it .. and my upper story mumbled again : ‘hey ! maybe you should think of covering your ears as well ..’ and off I went to Hakim the hair dresser at Taj Hotel with my plan .. and executed, it remained till date.”

Soon, the two actors became co-stars, then friends and their equation later resulted in a family relation, as Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter Shweta got married to businessman Nikhil Nanda, who is the maternal grandson of late Raj Kapoor, brother of Shashi Kapoor. Sharing about the growth of their bond, Bachchan writes, “What followed .. is a documentation of very intimate association, personal exigencies .. collective professional camaraderie .. ending in family bindings…”

The most emotional bit comes towards the end where Amitabh Bachchan talks about Kapoor’s failing health after the demise of his wife Jennifer in 1984.

“He had been ailing… Somewhere he had let himself go after the passing away of his dear wife Jennifer .. I had visited him on occasion in Hospital during some of the times he had been hospitalised earlier .. but I never went to see him again .. I would never have .. I never ever wanted to see this beautiful friend and ‘samdhi’ in the state I saw him in hospital… and I did not today, when they informed me that he had gone,” Bachchan writes.

Closing the tribute, the actor shares with the fans that Shashi Kapoor used to fondly address him as ‘Babbua’. “He fondly addressed me as ‘babbua’ .. and with him have gone many incredible unread chapters of his and my life…,” the post concludes.

Shashi Kapoor died aged 79 after suffering from kidney problems. His funeral will be held today afternoon.

India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test Day 2: Virat Kohli, Who Had 0 Double Centuries Till 2016, Scores His 6th

Virat Kohli is only the second Indian to score back-to-back double centuries after Vinod Kambli.

India captain Virat Kohli on Sunday notched up his 6th double century as India dominated the first session of play on Day 2 of the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 29-year-old is now the only captain to score six double centuries in Test cricket, breaking West Indies great Brian Lara's record of 5.

Interestingly, Kohli had no double centuries on his resume till 2016. The stylish right-hander is only the second Indian to score back-to-back double centuries after Vinod Kambli. Kohli remained on 156 with Rohit Sharma on six at the end of the Day 1. Kohli joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in sharing the record of most number of double centuries for India in Tests. Kohli took 238 deliveries to complete his second consecutive double hundred.

Kohli's knock was applauded by the cricketing fraternity.

He scored 243 off 287 balls, an innings that included 25 boundaries.
Along with Rohit Sharma (65, 101 balls), Kohli added 135 runs for the fifth wicket as Sri Lanka never looked like getting any wickets during the session before Lakshan Sandakan induced a bottom edge off Rohit at the stroke of lunch. Rohit, who made a comeback to playing in a Test match in Nagpur, now has five consecutive scores of over 50 plus in his last five matches in longest format.

He had three successive half tons against New Zealand last year before being injured. He made a comeback with a hundred and looked good for another one before being dismissed by Sandakan.
The Indians did not take any risks yet scored 129 runs in the first session as Sri Lankan pacers either bowled half-volleys on off-stump channel or drifted on the pads. They wasted the new ball as both Kohli and Rohit dispatched the loose balls with consummate ease.
The two spinners mostly bowled short with Dilruwan Perera unable to find his length. His spin bowling partner chinaman Lakshan Sandakan used more googlies but it was Rohit, who attacked more than Kohli.

He lofted Sandakan over long-off for a six and got to his half-century with another down the ground six off Perera. It was not before Kohli had pulled Lahiru Gamage towards deep mid-wicket for two runs to complete another double century in 238 balls.

In BJP vs Congress In Gujarat, A Test To See Which Has Better Ground Game

Join Our : -Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News

Ground networks will decide the outcome in North Gujarat's Mehsana district, traditionally a BJP stronghold and now considered a battleground because of the Congress's alliance with caste leaders like Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor.

Mehsana: As it heads into an election in Gujarat next week, the BJP faces a challenge to its dominance in one of its most prominent mainstay states from a host of factors - from anti-incumbency to a new generation of community leaders.
But the party says it will prevail - in part because of its legendary grassroots network, nurtured by BJP chief Amit Shah, which has proven successful in getting the votes out on Election Day.

The Congress has scoffed at this, claiming the Amit Shah-powered election machine is overhyped, and that the Congress has tried to fix its own somewhat unreliable party machinery.
We set out to test the claims of both parties from Mehsana district in north Gujarat, traditionally a BJP stronghold, but now a battleground because of the Congress's alliance with caste leaders like Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor.

North Gujarat has a sizeable numbers of Patels, a dominant agrarian and business community and Thakors, an OBC or Other Backward Class community.

Our first stop was the Patel-dominated Vijapur assembly seat won by the Congress last time.

Except the Congress MLA has crossed over to the BJP.

But this time he wasn't given a ticket.

Instead, the BJP has fielded a prominent local businessman, Ramanbhai Patel, who runs a chain of Maruti car dealerships.

In Ramanbhai's campaign team, we meet Jitesh Patel, who says he heads a Shakti Kendra, the BJP's description for a committee at the Mandal level. (Mandal is an administrative unit, between district and village or town).

Patel tells us he has seven booths under him. "Each booth has a head in-charge of the voters list for that booth. There are 50 names on each page (of the voters list). Each page has a BJP page in-charge," he said.

On our request, he hands us a copy of booth heads under his watch - a typed list of names and cellphone numbers.

Click Here To For All  India News

We dial the first six names on the list. Of the six, phone calls to three people were either not met with a response or they denied being booth heads; three people, however, replied, saying that they were indeed heading booth committees.

When we ask for the next level of coordinators - the page supervisors - the party says they will get back to us, since "everyone is in the field right now". They never did.
The Congress has fielded a party old timer Natha Patel from Vijapur. He is nowhere to be seen.

He tells us he is still in Ahmedabad, a two-hour drive away. His colleagues, however, claim he is "campaigning in nearby villages" and insist he will turn up soon.

Vijay Patel, one of his campaign managers, says the Congress has a base in every booth in the district, with 10 to 15 workers in each booth.

We repeat the same experiment, dialling the first six names on the list. Of the six, the phone numbers of four were non responsive; two, however, replied, saying that they were the heads of these booth committees and they did have people under them.

The Congress also handed us a list of supervisors of individuals pages, with names, cellphone numbers, and photographs.

Dialing the first six names on that list results in this: three of them answered positively and claimed they were page in-charges, but the other three didn't. One of them didn't answer the phone and the other two had no contact with the Congress at all.

By the time we were done, the Congress candidate, Natha Patel finally turned up.
We ask him why he told us he was in Ahmedabad when he was clearly nearby. "See, people keep calling, so to avoid them I said that I was away. I was campaigning in nearby villages," he said.

Our next stop: the Becharaji seat in north Gujarat which has a mix of Patels and Thakors.

Against the BJP's candidate, Rajni Patel, the two-time MLA, the Congress has fielded Bharat Thakor, a candidate chosen by its new ally Alpesh Thakor.

Click Here To For All Gujarat News

From the list given to aapkasamachar by the BJP candidate, we dialled six booth supervisors.
Of the six, two did not answer. Of the remaining 4, two denied being booth in-charges, and two denied being assigned any booth.

When it came to the Congress however, we were not, given such a list despite assurances.

One of the reasons could be the adverse reaction to the selection of Bharat Thakor, a first-timer in politics. Thousands of Congress workers loyal to party hopeful Kiritbhai Patel, who was hoping to get the seat, protested at party headquarters in Ahmedabad earlier this week.

We made at least 20 calls to Bharat Thakor's team; on each occasion we were told that the list would be shared with us "in five minutes" and that "sir (Bharat Thakor) is in a meeting", hence the delay.
