IPL Playoffs: How Teams Stand In Qualification Race

IPL 2018 is on the final stretch in the race for the playoffs. Some unexpected results for teams in the bottom half of the IPL Points Table has created an interesting scenario, which sees five teams still in with a chance to reach the IPL playoffs. While third-placed Kolkata Knight Riders have 14 points, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab are all on 12 points with one match remaining for each of these teams. Here is a look at how the teams stand and what they need to do to make it to the IPL 2018 playoffs.

Kolkata Knight Riders (14 points from 13 matches, Run Rate: -0.091)

Though the Kolkata franchise has a two-point advantage over the other teams that are in the race for playoffs, KKR are in an unenviable position of facing table-toppers SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). SRH might have already qualified for the playoffs but still have a lot to play for. The Hyderabad franchise needs to win to stay at the top but a loss could see them being overtaken by MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings. So SRH will not be taking it easy and KKR will have their hands full.

But KKR at least have their future in their own hands -- something the other teams don't. A win is all that KKR need to reach the playoffs but even if they lose, there is a chance of reaching the last four. If KKR lose, they will need Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore to lose as well as both these teams boast of a better net run-rate.

A Rajasthan win over RCB and a Delhi Daredevils win over Mumbai will be the best scenario for KKR but they still will need to make sure that they do not lose by a big margin. If Kings XI Punjab are to surpass KKR, they will need to win big against CSK and that still might not be enough for KXIP.
Mumbai Indians (12 points, Run Rate: +0.384)

Mumbai Indians are also in a strong position to qualify. A win over bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils should secure them a place in the IPL playoffs due to their high run-rate. But Mumbai Indians need to win at all costs because loss would be the end of their campaign.
The defending champions at least will be up against a team that has nothing to play for but pride. A win for Mumbai still might not guarantee them a place. The scenario for that to happen is that KKR beat SRH, and Royal Challengers Bangalore get the better of Rajasthan Royals by a huge margin. In that event, KKR will qualify by the virtue of their win while RCB's big win would give their run-rate a big boost and could possibly see them leapfrog Mumbai.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (12 points, Run Rate: +0.264)

Virat Kohli's team were down and out just a week ago but back-to-back wins and some other results going their way have seen them stay in contention. A big score and a 14-run win against SRH helped RCB improve on their run-rate.
If RCB win their final match against Rajasthan Royals, they will need either Kolkata Knight Riders or Mumbai Indians to lose to make to the top four. The best scenario for Kohli's team will be if Mumbai Indians also lose, but in the event they win, then RCB will need a big win over Rajasthan to have the possibility of bettering MI's net run-rate.
Rajasthan Royals (12 points, Run Rate: -0.403)

Rajasthan Royals are in a difficult spot and will need a lot of other results going their way to reach the IPL playoffs. Rajasthan first need to beat RCB in their match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday. Then they need Kolkata Knight Riders or Mumbai Indians to lose. If both teams (KKR, MI) win and Rajasthan Royals also manage to beat RCB, that will mean Mumbai and Rajasthan will be locked at 14 points each while KKR will be on 16 and would have qualified.
Rajasthan's run-rate is much lower than that of Mumbai, so it will be next to impossible for them to overhaul them. The best case scenario for Rajasthan is that KKR lose to SRH by a big margin and that could give a chance to Rajasthan to leapfrog KKR if they beat RCB by a big margin as well.
Kings XI Punjab (12 points, Run Rate: -0.490)

The Ravichandran Ashwin-led side is pretty much in the same boat as Rajasthan Royals. They would need a fair few favours to have any chance of qualifying for the IPL 2018 playoffs. Punjab first and foremost need to beat Chennai Super Kings by a huge margin and that still could not be enough if Mumbai, KKR and RCB win.
To try and better Mumbai and RCB's net run rate, Kings XI Punjab will need a miracle and that scenario looks next to impossible. Punjab hope that KKR, Mumbai and RCB all lose and then hope that they are able to better Rajasthan's or KKR's run-rate. A more likely possibility will be that of overhauling Rajasthan, who need to beat RCB. But a big loss for KKR and a big win for Punjab could see the latter climb over the Kolkata franchise.

India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test Day 2: Virat Kohli, Who Had 0 Double Centuries Till 2016, Scores His 6th

Virat Kohli is only the second Indian to score back-to-back double centuries after Vinod Kambli.

India captain Virat Kohli on Sunday notched up his 6th double century as India dominated the first session of play on Day 2 of the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 29-year-old is now the only captain to score six double centuries in Test cricket, breaking West Indies great Brian Lara's record of 5.

Interestingly, Kohli had no double centuries on his resume till 2016. The stylish right-hander is only the second Indian to score back-to-back double centuries after Vinod Kambli. Kohli remained on 156 with Rohit Sharma on six at the end of the Day 1. Kohli joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in sharing the record of most number of double centuries for India in Tests. Kohli took 238 deliveries to complete his second consecutive double hundred.

Kohli's knock was applauded by the cricketing fraternity.

He scored 243 off 287 balls, an innings that included 25 boundaries.
Along with Rohit Sharma (65, 101 balls), Kohli added 135 runs for the fifth wicket as Sri Lanka never looked like getting any wickets during the session before Lakshan Sandakan induced a bottom edge off Rohit at the stroke of lunch. Rohit, who made a comeback to playing in a Test match in Nagpur, now has five consecutive scores of over 50 plus in his last five matches in longest format.

He had three successive half tons against New Zealand last year before being injured. He made a comeback with a hundred and looked good for another one before being dismissed by Sandakan.
The Indians did not take any risks yet scored 129 runs in the first session as Sri Lankan pacers either bowled half-volleys on off-stump channel or drifted on the pads. They wasted the new ball as both Kohli and Rohit dispatched the loose balls with consummate ease.
The two spinners mostly bowled short with Dilruwan Perera unable to find his length. His spin bowling partner chinaman Lakshan Sandakan used more googlies but it was Rohit, who attacked more than Kohli.

He lofted Sandakan over long-off for a six and got to his half-century with another down the ground six off Perera. It was not before Kohli had pulled Lahiru Gamage towards deep mid-wicket for two runs to complete another double century in 238 balls.

MS Dhoni doing absolutely fine, why are people pointing him out: Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli vehemently defended MS Dhoni whose place in the team has come under scrutiny following his recent performances with the bat.

Virat Kohlivehemently defended MS Dhoni stating that the former Indian captain remains fit despite his age and that he remains one of the most important members of the team. “First, I don’t understand why are people only pointing him out, I’m not able to understand this,” said the Indian skipper in apress conference after India’s third T20I against New Zealand. Kohli said that the main reason for Dhoni’s place in the Indian side being questioned is because of his age. “If I fail three times, no one is going to point fingers at me because I’m not over 35,” he said.

MS Dhoni’s role came under scrutiny once again after India’s loss to New Zealand in the second T20I. India had lost too many wickets while chasing a target of 197 and Dhoni struggled to get going, resulting in the run rate climbing. Kohli, though, said that any player batting in that position would have been unable to get runs early in their innings. “You have to understand, the position in which he comes out to bat, even Hardik [Pandya] could not score in that game,” Kohli said.

Click Here To For Sports News

“Then why are we only pointing out one man? Hardik also got out in the last T20 that we played in Rajkot. We are conveniently targeting only one man which is not fair. We also have to look at the fact that by the time he comes in, either the run rate is already eight-and-a-half or nine-and-a-half and the wicket is also not the same when the new ball is bowled,” said Kohli.

“Also, the batsmen who are set from the top, they find it easier to strike the ball straightaway compared to the guys who come lower down the order,” said Kohli, “And the kind of wicket that we have played on, the wear and tear has been much more in the latter half. You have to assess everything.”

Kohli pointed out that Dhoni remains fit and that he is contributing to the team. “The guy is fit, he is passing all the fitness tests, he is contributing to the team in every way possible, tactically on the field, with the bat. If you look at the series against Sri Lanka and Australia, he did really well and in this series he hasn’t got much time to bat,” said the Indian captain, “As team management and players, we understand the situations in which he goes out to bat.

We don’t get emotional and excited by the opinions of people who are looking at things from a different point of view. If you are playing, you know how the wicket is and what the situation is like. So, I think he is doing absolutely fine. He understands his game, he understands his role, but it doesn’t come off every time. He hit a six in Delhi and it was shown five times in the post-match show. Everyone got really happy.

And suddenly he doesn’t score in one game and we are after his life. I think people need to be a bit more patient. He’s a guy who understands various cricketers. He’s a very smart guy. He understands where he stands with his body, with his game. So I don’t think anyone else has the right to decide that for him.”

Indian cricket team’s No 4 Roulette not expected to end soon

→ join Our Telegram Channel

Indian cricket team has tried as many as 11 players for the No 4 position since the 2015 World Cup.

Click Here For More Cricket News

Indian cricket team has eyes locked on the 2019 World Cup. The captain, coach and selectors are clearly working towards the prestigious title as they continue to chop and change the ODI squad for every series and the batting order, bowling combinations continues to be juggled. As things stand, no spot can be taken for granted. If the two leading spinners in the world R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja can be rested for multiple series, if Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, premier bowlers and ones who played a crucial role in India’s road to 2015 World Cup semis, can warm the bench then anybody can.

While the spinners debate has been going on, the matter of concern at the moment is the very important no.4 batting slot. Like Tests, in ODIs this position is the link between the top-order and the lower middle-order and the right man needs to occupy it in order to keep the balance of the playing XI intact. A pinch-hitter is a gamble while a dead-bat is a big risk. No team would want to go either way and intends to find the man with the right blend to do the job. For India, Yuvraj Singhand Virat Kohli did the job in the 2011 World Cup triumph and it was Ajinkya Rahane who came out to bat at no.4 in six out of seven matches of the 2015 edition. The only time the right-hander didn’t was the opening match against Pakistan where Suresh Raina scored a fluent 74.

Unlike 2015, where the team stuck with one batsman for most of the tournament, 2011 World Cup saw India use as many as four players – Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathanand Gautam Gambhir. India’s 2011 World Cup squad had players who could ease into any role with utmost ease. The openers were sorted in Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, at no.3 they had Gautam Gambhir and the slots to follow could be easily filled by Yuvraj, Kohli, Dhoni, Raina, Pathan.

Click Here For More Apps News

Yuvraj and Kohli enjoyed success at this position and the two hit individual hundreds. India played nine matches in the World Cup, Kohli played at no.4 in five of those but back then there wasn’t an assured spot in the middle-order. It was more about playing the situation rather than position. MS Dhoni’s promotion in the final against Sri Lanka further validates the team thinking. With Muttiah Muralitharan extracting good purchase out of the wicket, Dhoni promoted himself up the order, ahead of the in-form Yuvraj, and rest, as they say, is history.

Six years later, and two years before India begin their quest for a third ICC World Cup title, they find themselves in a similar situation. The openers, like the 2011 edition, seem sorted and reserves like Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul only make it a good a problem to have. With Kohli at no.3, there is no point looking further. The big question arises for the spots to follow. No 4, 5 and 6 are still the spots up for grabs and think-tank continues to tinker with different players for different situations. Don’t be surprised if you again see Hardik Pandya coming out to bat at No 4 to hit a spinner out of the track like he did to Ashton Agar in the third India-Australia ODI.

☞ Click Here For More Bollywood News

Since 2015 World Cup, where India used Rahane for most of the tournament at No 4, India have used as many as 11 players for the spot. Yuvraj, Dhoni and Manish Pandey have played most games and Yuvraj’s tally of 358 runs is the most successful. It is worth bearing in mind that 150 out of those 358 runs came in a single innings against England and the elegant southpaw has struggled since then. Dhoni, however, has been steady and has scored 318 runs in the eight matches he has played. Pandey’s numbers make a disappointing reading as he has scored 183 runs in eight matches with a best knock of a unbeaten 104. Rahane, too, has enjoyed success at this position but the team management has made it clear that the right-hander will be preferred for the opening slot. Pandya’s 142 in 4 matches are encouraging and the all-rounder is expected to play the role of a floater, according to match situation.

It’s a throwback to the Gary Kirsten and Greg Chappell days when as many as three players would be ready with their pads on and go into bat according to the situation at hand. It was successfully implemented when Kirsten was in charge and the team certainly benefited from not having a rigid batting position structure. Pandya’s elevation, Dhoni’s demotion and Karthik experiment are signs of things to come as India continue to play the roulette for the middle and lower middle-order.

Two old Mumbai hands, who have seen each other grow as cricketers from teenage days and who played for the same club, sealed the series for India, propelling the team to its ninth consecutive ODI win and sixth successive bilateral-series win, which also put them on top of the ICC ODI rankings. A 139-run opening partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma saw India make light work of a 294-run target set by Australia.

In 2007, Rohit was already a big name in Mumbai cricket circles, big enough for Rahane to drag his friend Dhawal Kulkarni to watch him bat. Rohit was Mumbai’s most exciting new batsman, and already, word was spreading around Mumbai cricket: Watch out for this Borivali boy, he would soon play for India.
Rahane was mesmerised by Rohit’s batting, and as luck would have it, both went on to play for Indian Oil. Both have their own individual style of play, and Rahane has already earned a reputation in Test cricket while Rohit has carved a place for himself in the limited-overs format. Rahane is eying a permanent spot in ODIs, and Rohit is similarly dreaming about Tests, but on Sunday the two pulled out all the stops to make India’s task simple.

However, credit should also go to young Hardik Pandya, who is doing his best to become the all-rounder India has yearned for a while now. It was the Mumbai duo, though, who set the pace in the chase. If Rohit was aggressive, Rahane was elegant. A slow starter usually, Rohit raced away in style, slamming a 62-ball 71 with four sixes and six fours. Australian pacers tried to bowl short of length at him, and Rohit made them pay. He even slugged a Kane Richardson delivery out of the ground.

Rohit completed his 33rd ODI fifty by biffing a huge six off Aston Agar. His knock ended with a top edge to substitute fielder Hilton Cartwright at deep mid-wicket. By then, though, India had got the start they wanted, especially when their middle order has been disappointing in the past two games. Two over later, Rahane too departed, trapped in front of the stumps. His 70 had come off 76 balls. He will probably be ruing that he didn’t carry on for a big innings as his place will be again up for grabs once Shikhar Dhawan comes back.

It was not all India, though, as Australia managed to get the wickets of Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav in quick succession. India needed 88 runs in 14 overs and the onus was on Pandya and Manish Pandey. The Baroda all-rounder had been promoted this time and chose his bowlers well on Sunday – the spinner Agar was his prime target. His four sixes came off Agar; three of those flew over deep the mid-wicket area.

By the time Pandya was out, India needed just 10 more, and Pandey ensured India defeated Australia by five wickets. Later, Kohli would credit Ravi Shastri for the promotion of Pandya. “His promotion today was Ravi Bhai’s thought. He felt we needed to attack the spinner. We totally back him and he’s a hardworking guy.”
It was the third time in a bilateral series that Australia had lost the first three ODIs. It would hurt, considering this was their best effort so far in the series, which came courtesy Aaron Finch, who returned for this game after missing out the first two due to injury. Finch plundered 124 runs in quick time and charged Australia to a decent total, but it was not enough. Kohli sent out more worrying signs for the opposition when he said, “We may give opportunities for people from now, but all 15 guys know that we got to be ruthless once we step onto the field. I know it won’t happen every single day, but at least that mindset is there. Credit to the whole squad for the series win, but the journey stops only after the final game.”
