Note ban anniversary: RBI says still verifying returned notes

NEW DELHI: Nearly a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation, the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bills returned to banks are still being "processed in all earnest" through a sophisticated currency verification system, the RBI has said.

In reply to an RTI query, the central bank said it has processed about 1,134 crore pieces of Rs 500 notes and 524.90 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 junked notes, having face value of Rs 5.67 lakh crore and Rs 5.24 lakh crore respectively, as on September 30.

The combined value of the processed notes is Rs 10.91 lakh crore approximately, according to the reply.

"Specified Bank Notes are being processed in all earnest in double shift on all available machines (sophisticated counting machines)," the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in reply to the RTI query filed by a PTI correspondent.

The central bank was asked to provide details of demonetised notes counted so far.

Replying to a question on providing the deadline for completing the counting exercise, it said, "The verification of notes withdrawn from the circulation is an ongoing process".

The RBI said at least 66 Sophisticated Currency Verification and Processing (CVPS) machines were being used for counting of junked Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that were deposited with various banks post demonetisation.

The government had on November 8 last year banned the use of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and allowed the holders of these currency bills to deposit them with banks or use them at certain notified utilities.

The notes deposited or collected are being verified by the central bank at its offices to establish the total number of currency bills returned and to weed out those that are fake.

Several opposition parties including the Congress and Mamata Banerjee's TMC have announced that they would observe November 8, the first anniversary of demonetisation, as 'Black Day' and would hold protests across the country to highlight its "ill-effects" on the economy.

To counter the opposition protest, the ruling BJP has decided to observe the note ban anniversary as "anti- blackmoney day".

In its annual report for 2016-17 released on August 30, the RBI had said Rs 15.28 lakh crore, or 99 per cent of the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, have returned to the banking system.

In the annual report, which was for the year ended June 30, 2017, the central bank said only Rs 16,050 crore out of the Rs 15.44 lakh crore in old high-denomination notes have not returned.

As on November 8, 2016, there were 1,716.5 crore pieces of Rs 500 and 685.8 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 notes in circulation, totalling Rs 15.44 lakh crore, it had said.

"Subject to future corrections based on verification process when completed, the estimated value of specified bank notes received as on June 30, 2017, is Rs 15.28 trillion," RBI had said in the report.

While the counterfeit currency notes made for a minuscule number, RBI post-demonetisation spent Rs 7,965 crore on printing new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 bills and notes of other denominations, more than double the Rs 3,421 crore spent in the previous year, it said.

WhatsApp Reportedly Letting Users Delete Sent Messages: How It Works

WhatsApp message delete/ recall feature has been in the rumour mill for nearly a year now, with the company mentioning it in the internal code. But fans will be pleased to know that the feature, which had not made an official appearance so far, has started trickling out to some WhatsApp users. WABetainfo now reports that the new feature, named 'Delete for Everyone', has started rolling out to some users on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone apps. It only works if both the recipient and sender have the latest version of WhatsApp installed, the site notes, and it also works on Web version.

  • How to use WhatsApp 'Delete for Everyone' feature

The feature is said to be one of the most requested one, and is likely to make things slightly easier for WhatsApp users. The report says that it will be called 'Delete for Everyone' and several users have started noticing the feature in the latest WhatsApp version when they press the trash icon. Alongside Delete for Everyone, users will also see the Delete for Me option, if they only want to delete the message from their phone.
It adds that the rollout is slow and it may take some time. As we already mentioned, the feature will only work for both the parties if the sender and recipient are using the latest WhatsApp version. The feature is said to work for all kinds of messages on the most widely used instant messaging app. The report says it will work for all texts, images, videos, GIFs, voice messages, contact, files, location, quoted message, and status replies on WhatsApp.

It also only works within 7 minutes of sending the message - after that, the message can't be recalled. Deleted messages will be replaced by "This message was deleted for everyone." Based on the initial report, the sent message will be deleted from the chat page as well as from the notifications pane. For those unaware, the recall feature is already available in other popular chat apps like Telegram, Viber, and others, and WhatsApp is finally looking to make it available to its billion daily active users as well.

WABetainfo notes that WhatsApp at the moment does not recall a message contained in a quoted message. Messages cannot be deleted for everyone if they are sent in a broadcast list. It also adds that messages will not be deleted on the Symbian app, so those users will continue to see the recalled message. The site adds that in its current implementation, WhatsApp will not notify the user that the message has been deleted.
Separately, for Android users, WhatsApp beta version 2.17.397 is now out and it adds new emojis. For those unaware, WhatsApp introduced its own set of emojis that were different from what we have seen so far. The new WhatsApp emojis were visible in beta version 2.17.363 for Android users, and were rolled out to more people. The all-new WhatsApp Beta 2.17.397 brings new emojis like star eyes, swearing face, vomiting face, shushing face, and more to the list. The new beta version was first reported by Android Police which also points that the new emoji set also gets the T-Rex. Interested users can head to APK Mirror to download the new version or join the beta program to keep updated.

Raveena Tandon birthday special: ‘Mast mast’ girl who ruled the 90s with elegance and sensuality

→ Join Our Whatsapp Group to Get Latest Updates

Happy Birthday Raveena Tandon: Having spent more than 25 years in the film industry, the ageless beauty definitely has a presentable body of work and today as she turns 43, we pick some of her best songs which even if recreated today can't touch the benchmark set by her.

Raveena Tandon left many hearts racing when she grooved to the tunes of “Tip Tip Barsa Paani” with Akshay Kumar back in the 90s. She was the one who translated elegance, poise and sensuality on the silver screen in her many movies and back then, she ruled the hearts of her million fans across the world. Today, even after spending over two decades in the industry, Raveena wears the sparkle in her eye and the mischief in her smile that got people talking about her when she made her Bollywood debut with 1991 movie Pathar Ke Phool which also starred Salman Khan.

Next, when she appeared on screen with Akshay Kumar in 1994 hit Mohra, people took her to be the actor who broke out of the shell. Apart from working in many Bollywood potboilers, Raveena was one of those who also didn’t hesitate to break the stereotypes around female actors being only the eye candies by doing movies like Daman, Satta, Shool and Aks. And not to forget, in Rajkumar Santoshi’s comic drama, Andaz Apna Apna which also had Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor, Raveena proved that there is nothing which she can’t do and can adapt herself to the demand of the script.

Having spent more than 25 years in the film industry, the ageless beauty definitely has a presentable body of work and today as she turns 43, we pick some of her best songs which even if recreated today can’t touch the benchmark set by her.

1.  Tip Tip Barsa Pani

Talking about Raveena’s hit playlist and not mentioning Tip Tip Barsa Pani would be an injustice to the actor. The hit rain song had Raveena sharing a sizzling chemistry with Akshay Kumar. The wet chiffon saree and the oomph with which Raveena danced on the sensuous number, made it an unforgettable one for all the 90s kids.

2.  Shehar Ki Ladki

The chartbuster from the movie Rakshak also starring Suneil Shetty had everyone drooling over the glamorous and stylish Raveena Tandon.

3.   Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast

The peppy number crooned by Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy from the movie Mohra gave Raveena the title of the ‘Mast Mast’ girl of Bollywood. However, it was not Raveena who was the first choice for the song. It was only after the death of Divya Bharti that she was signed for the role. Also, you might not know that the song has another version, “Mai Cheez Badi Hun Mast Mast”. The song even got recreated in Abbas-Mustan film Machine.

4.  Akhiyon Se Goli Maare

Govinda and Raveena Tandon became the best dancing pair of the 90s. The way the two stars grooved, the audience was forced to hit the dance floor. Once, talking about Govinda, Raveena said, “We share a common love for music and dance. We used to try to outdo each other, which got the best out of us.” Even today, when this hit dance jodi of the 90s gets on the dance floor, you can expect nothing but a blockbuster performance.

5.  Kisi Disco Mein Jaaye
Once again Raveena shook a leg with Govinda and the movie buffs went gaga over this hit dancing pair of Bollywood.
6. Kabhi Tu Chhalia Lagta Hai
We can’t stop ourselves from adding this one to the list. The cute Salman Khan and the innocent Raveena in this song won our hearts. This was the first time that the audience got acquainted with Raveena’s dancing skills.
Wish the ‘Mast Mast’ girl of Bollywood in the comments section below.

Indian cricket team’s No 4 Roulette not expected to end soon

→ join Our Telegram Channel

Indian cricket team has tried as many as 11 players for the No 4 position since the 2015 World Cup.

Click Here For More Cricket News

Indian cricket team has eyes locked on the 2019 World Cup. The captain, coach and selectors are clearly working towards the prestigious title as they continue to chop and change the ODI squad for every series and the batting order, bowling combinations continues to be juggled. As things stand, no spot can be taken for granted. If the two leading spinners in the world R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja can be rested for multiple series, if Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, premier bowlers and ones who played a crucial role in India’s road to 2015 World Cup semis, can warm the bench then anybody can.

While the spinners debate has been going on, the matter of concern at the moment is the very important no.4 batting slot. Like Tests, in ODIs this position is the link between the top-order and the lower middle-order and the right man needs to occupy it in order to keep the balance of the playing XI intact. A pinch-hitter is a gamble while a dead-bat is a big risk. No team would want to go either way and intends to find the man with the right blend to do the job. For India, Yuvraj Singhand Virat Kohli did the job in the 2011 World Cup triumph and it was Ajinkya Rahane who came out to bat at no.4 in six out of seven matches of the 2015 edition. The only time the right-hander didn’t was the opening match against Pakistan where Suresh Raina scored a fluent 74.

Unlike 2015, where the team stuck with one batsman for most of the tournament, 2011 World Cup saw India use as many as four players – Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathanand Gautam Gambhir. India’s 2011 World Cup squad had players who could ease into any role with utmost ease. The openers were sorted in Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, at no.3 they had Gautam Gambhir and the slots to follow could be easily filled by Yuvraj, Kohli, Dhoni, Raina, Pathan.

Click Here For More Apps News

Yuvraj and Kohli enjoyed success at this position and the two hit individual hundreds. India played nine matches in the World Cup, Kohli played at no.4 in five of those but back then there wasn’t an assured spot in the middle-order. It was more about playing the situation rather than position. MS Dhoni’s promotion in the final against Sri Lanka further validates the team thinking. With Muttiah Muralitharan extracting good purchase out of the wicket, Dhoni promoted himself up the order, ahead of the in-form Yuvraj, and rest, as they say, is history.

Six years later, and two years before India begin their quest for a third ICC World Cup title, they find themselves in a similar situation. The openers, like the 2011 edition, seem sorted and reserves like Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul only make it a good a problem to have. With Kohli at no.3, there is no point looking further. The big question arises for the spots to follow. No 4, 5 and 6 are still the spots up for grabs and think-tank continues to tinker with different players for different situations. Don’t be surprised if you again see Hardik Pandya coming out to bat at No 4 to hit a spinner out of the track like he did to Ashton Agar in the third India-Australia ODI.

☞ Click Here For More Bollywood News

Since 2015 World Cup, where India used Rahane for most of the tournament at No 4, India have used as many as 11 players for the spot. Yuvraj, Dhoni and Manish Pandey have played most games and Yuvraj’s tally of 358 runs is the most successful. It is worth bearing in mind that 150 out of those 358 runs came in a single innings against England and the elegant southpaw has struggled since then. Dhoni, however, has been steady and has scored 318 runs in the eight matches he has played. Pandey’s numbers make a disappointing reading as he has scored 183 runs in eight matches with a best knock of a unbeaten 104. Rahane, too, has enjoyed success at this position but the team management has made it clear that the right-hander will be preferred for the opening slot. Pandya’s 142 in 4 matches are encouraging and the all-rounder is expected to play the role of a floater, according to match situation.

It’s a throwback to the Gary Kirsten and Greg Chappell days when as many as three players would be ready with their pads on and go into bat according to the situation at hand. It was successfully implemented when Kirsten was in charge and the team certainly benefited from not having a rigid batting position structure. Pandya’s elevation, Dhoni’s demotion and Karthik experiment are signs of things to come as India continue to play the roulette for the middle and lower middle-order.
