Padmaavat finally gets an official release date, to arrive on January 25

Controversy ridden Padmaavat will finally hit screens on January 25. This Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh starrer has had a difficult journey right from the beginning.

The makers of controversy-ridden period epic Padmaavat (previously Padmavati) on Sunday officially announced the film’s release date. The film will hit screens on January 25.

Padmaavat has had a difficult journey right from the beginning, during production to its release. Previously, the makers had postponed the film indefinitely from its original release date of December 1 due to widespread protests by right-wing organisations across the country. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone had. received death threats and bounties on their heads.

Announcing the new release date, all the three actors, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh took to their Twitter handles and shared an updated poster of Padmaavat.

Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO, Viacom18, said in a statement, “Padmaavat is a cinematic masterpiece in every sense of the word. We hope that we will surpass the expectations of our fans from across the world. We are humbled with the immense support we have received from the government authorities, the Central Board of Film Certification and the entire film fraternity. Padmaavat is a story that’s inherently Indian in its context, ethos and values. In the past, international filmmakers have presented Indian stories such as Gandhi, Life of Pi, The Jungle Book and others to the world. We believe that this is the right time for us to truly make in India and show the world a tale that every Indian is proud of.”

Padmaavat is our magnum opus – a tribute to Rajput valour created at a scale that will be a delight to watch on the large screen. The film will witness a mega-scale release across maximum screens, languages & formats covering 2D, 3D & Imax 3D in India & the world. It carries the trademark style of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, wherein each frame of the film is a timeless work of art. We have partnered with Paramount Pictures to distribute the film across select international markets including non-traditional territories.

Padmaavat will create its own benchmark as an immortal classic when it releases across the world on the 25th of January,” added Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director and the person behind it all, said, “Padmaavat is a dream come true for me. I have always been fascinated by the stories of honor, valor and vigor of our great Rajput warriors that have been captured so beautifully in our literature and this movie is my homage to those glorious stories.

I would also like to thank the entire film fraternity for supporting Viacom18 and Bhansali Productions through the entire production and pre-release phase and hope they like the film they so supported.”

As we saw in the trailer last year, the film stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. Now that the release date is confirmed, we can’t wait to finally see the film.

Padmavat’ gets 25 January release date, causes chaos for upcoming films

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period saga ‘Padmavat’ (earlier ‘Padmavati’) finds a release date, is set to clash with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Padman’ on 25 January

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period saga Padmavat (earlier Padmavati) has clearly dealt with more than its share of controversy but the film finally has a release date. The Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor-starrer will arrive in theatres on 25 January for the extended Republic Day weekend, a spokesperson from Viacom18 Motion Pictures, co-producer of Padmavat, said on condition of anonymity.

In November last year, the studio had voluntarily deferred the December release of the film as protests on its historical accuracy continued across the country.
“We’re looking to have an official announcement ideally later this week. The first thing was to put a release date out, we will now begin the marketing,” the person said.
The Republic Day weekend was a release window floating around for quite some time. While trade experts had ruled out that possibility until last week given that both Akshay Kumar’s Padman and Neeraj Pandey-directed Aiyyary were scheduled for release then, the speculation had become stronger lately.
“The point is whether the producers will be adequately prepared to meet the 25th release date because the India release will be accompanied by an overseas release,” said film trade and exhibition expert Girish Johar. Out of the 5,500-odd workable screens in the country, Johar said Padman would have already blocked at least 1,500. This means Padmavat, which would have ideally got about 3,000-4,000 screens, will now get around 2,500 at the most.
Further, convincing individual state governments that have declared a ban on the film is an issue. Five states—Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar—have banned the film for now and Johar said they are all critical markets. To be sure, despite a clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a state is authorized to disallow the screening of a particular film. In the past, for instance, Aamir Khan’s Fanaa (2006) was banned in Gujarat after the actor took a stand on the Narmada Bachao Andolan issue.
Meanwhile, the Rajput Karni Sena has stuck to its demand for a complete ban on the film that it believes distorts historical facts and hurts the community’s sentiments. It has rejected the compromise that the censor board and the makers of Padmavat makers have arrived at, including a change in the title before agreeing to a U/A certificate. Other modifications include two disclaimers, one in the beginning and the other after the interval, a first for an Indian film, changes in the Ghoomar song featuring Padukone and removal of misleading references to historical places.

“This is the first time that the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) has been made to work under so much pressure and hire independent panellists besides its 200 members to view a film,” said a CBFC member, on the condition of anonymity. “Fringe elements should not disrupt the shows now, at least without watching the film.”
The person added that the Padmavat team was unlikely to wait much longer for theatrical release after the changes are incorporated, given the financial stakes involved. Atul Mohan, editor of trade magazine Complete Cinema, said that the year’s busy film schedule starts this weekend. The 12th weekend is booked by Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Kaalakaandi. While the Padman team has confirmed theatrical release on the 25, Aiyyary has reportedly been shifted to 9 February.
Meanwhile the Padmavat team itself wants some time to market the film in a positive light and put out non-controversial communication.
“Given what the film has gone through, we have to be very cautious now,” the Viacom18 spokesperson said.

Tiger Zinda Hai box office collection day 17: The rise and rise of Salman Khan’s film

Having swiftly moved past the coveted Rs 300 crore mark, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai has not shown any sign of slowing down.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the latest figures of the film saying, “It’s a TRIPLE CENTURY… #TigerZindaHai refuses to slow down… Crosses #Sultan… Now eyes #BajrangiBhaijaan [₹ 320.34 cr]… [Week 3] Fri 3.72 cr, Sat 5.62 cr. Total: ₹ 300.89 cr. India biz. #TZH.”

While it is almost futile to wonder why Tiger Zinda Hai is getting the incessant love of the audience even after two weeks from its release, the answer being the hardcore Bhai juggernaut.

What also worked in the film’s favour was the lack of any major releases in its following weeks. Yes, there were big Hollywood films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and All The Money In The World but Bollywood pretty much was going through a dull phase in terms of releases.

Next Friday, we have Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi hitting the theaters. Will the Akshat Verma directorial be able to hinder the rise and rise of Tiger Zinda Hai? We think not, since it is quite inconceivable for ardent Bhai fans to let go of their undue devotion.

Tiger Zinda Hai presents Salman in his best form, a suave, beefed up RAW agent entitled with a task only he can accomplish, the rescue of Indian nurses from terrorist kingpin, Abu Usman.

In an interview to indianexpress.com earlier, Salman had said, “People go to watch my films during festivals. They dress up, cheer and whistle. I have some other connect with my audience.

They just don’t want to see me cry on screen.” Well, we saw the result of that in Salman’s previous release Tubelight. But Tiger Zinda Hai, for that matter, is roaring high at the theaters.

I&B ministry dealt with several controversial issues in 2017

Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News

Controversy also erupted after two films "S Durga" and "Nude" were dropped from screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) even after the jury recommended that they be shown at the annual event

Uproar over the release of period drama “Padmavati” and two films not screened at IFFI were some of the issues the Information & Broadcasting Ministry had to deal with in 2017, which also saw several appointments including that of Prasoon Joshi as censor board chief. The ministry was also in the headlines for its advisory on condom advertisements on television.

In a move that surprised many, the Narendra Modi government allocated the I&B portfolio to the then Textile Minister Smriti Irani, who was shifted out of the human resource development ministry only last year in the backdrop of controversies surrounding her educational qualification, Hyderabad University Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide and alleged anti-India slogans at Jawaharlal NehruUniversity.

The portfolio of I&B fell vacant after M Venkaiah Naidu was chosen as the NDA nominee for the vice presidential elections. Irani was the fourth minister to be at the helm of affairs of the important ministry since the Modi government took over in 2014. Prior to Naidu, Arun Jaitley was the information and broadcasting minister, replacing Prakash Javadekar.

The government appointed actor Anupam Kher as the new chief of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He replaced Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as head of the Pune-based institute. The year also saw Pahlaj Nihalani, whose stint as the head of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was surrounded by controversy, being replaced by noted songwriter-poet Joshi. The ministry reconstituted the existing censor board with actress Vidya Balan being among the new members.

The year saw a full-blown controversy over the film “Padmavati” with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh joining the chorus against its release. There were widespread protests by Rajput community alleging that the film breached the honour of queen Padmini and distorted facts.
Controversy also erupted after two films “S Durga” and “Nude” were dropped from screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) even after the juryrecommended that they be shown at the annual event. The censor board ordered a re-examination of Sanal Kumar Sasidharans film “S Durga”, derailing its court-ordered screening at IFFI.
The bone of contention seemed to be the hashtag that follow the letter “S” in the revised title of the movie, which was earlier named “Sexy Durga”. The CBFC said the makers cannot exhibit the film further until the board reexamines it, adding a suitable date and time will be conveyed to the makers soon. The Kerala High Court had directed the I&B ministry to screen the film at IFFI.
The ministry was also in the news for issuing an advisory to all television channels, asking them to restrict airing of condom advertisements to slots between 10 pm and 6 am, triggering a controversy. In an official memorandum, the ministry later said, the advisory only pertained to sexually-explicit content being used to market certain condom brands which titillate the audience from a PR perspective.
The year also saw appointment of actor Anupam Kher as the chairman of the FTII, replacing Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as head of the Pune-based institute. His term had ended in March. Veteran journalist A Surya Prakash was appointed as the chairman of the Prasar Bharati board for a second consecutive term till February 8, 2020, when he turns 70.
Shashi S Vempati, a part-time member of the Prasar Bharati Board, was made the Chief Executive Officer of the public broadcaster, succeeding Rajeev Singh, member (finance) of the board, who was serving as the interim CEO after S C Panda retired earlier this year. New category of visa for foreign filmmakers was also created to ease issues related to their entry into the country.

A separate 24×7 DD channel for Jharkhand was announced during the year. DD Bihar was asked to telecast DD Ranchi programmes till the launch of its own 24×7 channel. In 2017, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) website got a new look with enhanced features while a new portal of DD News was also launched.

The Union Cabinet approved auctioning of more than 680 FM channels in 236 cities, including those in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, where the population is less than one lakh. In December, the ministry ordered an Assamese television channel to go off air for three days and a Gujarati channel for a day for violating the cable television network rules.

Senior Indian Administrative Service officer N K Sinha was appointed as the new secretary in the ministry after the transfer of Ajay Mittal as Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

There are 3 more days for the week to come to an end, and with the overwhelming response that it is getting and the humongous amount that the film is collecting at the box office, the movie is all set to get into Rs 200 crore club before the current week comes to a close.

Tiger Zinda Hai box office: Salman Khan film makes Rs 114.9 cr in 3 days, smashes records

Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai earned over Rs 45 crore at the box office on Sunday, taking its weekend earning to Rs 114.93 crore and toppling a few records in the process.
The year 2017 has been hard on the film trade. Big films bombed, star vehicles came cropper and it was left to middle-of-the-road cinema to bring in the money. However, in a year where Baahubali 2 went galloping over the Rs 1000 crore mark and more, others could barely make their way to the Rs 200 crore club.

In this scenario comes Salman Khan’s Christmas release Tiger Zinda Hai. The film has not only broken records of 2017, it has also trampled some of Khan’s previous ones. The film, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, has been sensational. “#TigerZindaHai is SENSATIONAL on Day 3... East-West-North-South, the biz witnesses REMARKABLE growth... Metros and beyond metros, plexes and single screens - it’s creating HAVOC... Fri 34.10 cr, Sat 35.30 cr, Sun 45.53 cr. Total: ₹ 114.93 cr. India biz. #TZH,” he wrote.

It also broke numerous records, set by Khan himself, “Salman versus Salman - first 3 days...
#BajrangiBhaijaan ₹ 102.60 cr [Fri-Sun] #Sultan ₹ 105.53 cr [released on Wed; Wed-Fri] #Tubelight ₹ 64.77 cr [Fri-Sun] #TigerZindaHai ₹ 114.93 cr [Fri-Sun] #TZH India biz.”

Tiger Zinda Hai is also the second film of Khan to land in Rs 300 crore club. “#TigerZindaHai #TZH is Salman Khan’s 12th film to cross ₹ 100 cr mark... The HIGHEST by any actor…Highest grosser: #BajrangiBhaijaan [₹ 320.34 cr] Two films in ₹ 300 cr Club: #BajrangiBhaijaan [₹ 320.34 cr] and #Sultan [₹ 300.45 cr] India biz,” Adarsh tweeted.

The film also starring Katrina Kaif made over Rs 45 crore on Sunday, a single-day record for a Hindi film. The weekend total of Rs 114.93 crore is also one of the biggest debuts ever seen for a Hindi film. Before this, Khan’s Sultan earned Rs 105 crore in three days. The 2016 film, which released on Eid and was also directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, went on to earn Rs 180 crore at the box office in the five-day weekend.

Earlier, trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted, “#TigerZindaHai emerges BOXOFFICE CHAMPION... Shows TERRIFIC trending on Day 2… All set to cross ₹ 100 cr today [Day 3]… Fri 34.10 cr [updated], Sat 35.30 cr. Total: ₹ 69.40 cr. India biz... Biz will be HUGE today and tomorrow [Christmas].”

Not only the domestic market, Tiger Zinda Hai is doing well in international market as well. Quoting rentrak numbers, Adarsh tweeted, “#TigerZindaHai is SUPER-STRONG in North America [USA + Canada]… USA: Fri $ 443,868 Sat $ 522,292 Total: $ 966,160 CANADA: Fri $ 95,852 Sat $ 123,900 Total: $ 219,752 NORTH AMERICA total: $ 1,185,912 [₹ 7.59 cr] @Rentrak.”

While its box office figures are impressive, Tiger Zinda Hai is chasing tough targets. Made at an approximate budget of Rs 150 crore, the film must earn Rs 300 crore to post a profit.

Tiger Zinda Hai movie review: The Katrina and Salman starrer is an enjoyable fare

Tiger Zinda Hai movie review: Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer goes several steps ahead in creating a channel between India and Pakistan: if their spies can bond in the face of a common enemy, why not the two estranged nations?

Tiger Zinda Hai movie cast:Salman KhanKatrina Kaif, Sajjaad Delafrooz, Anupriya Goenka, Kumud Mishra, Angad Bedi, Paresh Rawal, Girish Karnad
Tiger Zinda Hai movie director: Ali Abbas Zafar
Tiger Zinda Hai movie stars: 2.5 stars

Tiger is back. The sequel to Ek Tha Tiger reunites us with Salman The Spy, who still makes a killer ‘kaali’ daal, schmoozes with his beloved ‘biwi’ Zoya (yes, gasp, the very one from Pakistan) and saves the world, with a little bit of help from both their friends.
Tiger Zinda Hai also goes several steps ahead in creating a channel between India and Pakistan: if their spies can bond in the face of a common enemy, why not the two estranged nations? Only Bollywood can dare go down this ‘aman-ki-asha’ path with such schmaltzy bravura, and given that Salman had successfully darted across the border in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, why not do an encore this time around?

I’d enjoyed the first one while it lasted. I had fun in this one too, once I got past the whole ‘Come Children, Here’s Make A Spy Story For You’ explanatory mode of the flick, directed this time by Ali Abbas Zafar. Literally every plot point is picked up and repeated BEFORE it happens, so everything is easy peasy, comic-book-y. I shut my ears every time this happened, and returned only when the action re-started. Which, let me tell you, there is plenty of, and almost all well-choreographed, even if familiar. And the number of vehicles going up in smoke should give Rohit Shetty a complex.

You can see the filmmakers’ compulsion in choosing to simplify and flatten matters. Because the Middle East is one of the most complex points of conflict in the world, and the attempt to base a Salman actioner on a real event (a bunch of Indian and Pakistani nurses being held hostage by terrorists in 2014) is in real danger of turning off his ardent fans by being too full of information, which needs processing. I could sense the occasional bouts of restlessness from the row of young fans behind me, which vanished as soon as Bhai came on, all guns blazing.

Bitcoin mania: How Big B and family's $250,000 investment rose to $17.5 mn

Amitabh Bachchan,
 Kaun Banega Crorepati

Amitabh Bachchan, the Kaun Banega Crorepati host, undoubtedly knows how to build his wealth. As bitcoin mania reaches a fever pitch, the value of a stock investment by the Bachchan family has risen from $250,000 to $17.5 million in two and a half years. The Bachchans, one of Hindi cinema’s biggest names, had made their first significant equity investment in an overseas company through the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) in 2015.
Business Standard reported in 2015 that the father-son duo, Amitabh and Abhishek invested $250,000 (approximately Rs 1.57 crore) in Meridian Tech Pte Limited.
Back then, Meridian Tech was not very well known. That dramatically changed last week when Meridian's prime asset Ziddu-.com was acquired by another Meenavalli-backed overseas company LongFin Corp just two days after the latter's listing on NASDAQ.
“The investments were made through two separate accounts – $150,000 from Amitabh's account, and $100,000 from a joint account belonging to Amitabh and Abhishek,” Venkata Srinivas Meenavalli, founder and chief executive of Meridian Tech, told Business Standard
What magic words like blockchain can do
In December 2017, it is described as "a Blockchain technology empowered solutions provider" that offers microfinance using "cryptocurrencies across continents."
Thanks to magic words like 'blockchain' and 'cryptocurrencies', the LongFin stock rose more than 2,000% between last Wednesday and Monday, after surging over 2,500% on Friday when the deal to acquire Ziddu.com was announced.
"In lieu of their holding in Meridian Tech, Bachchans received 250,000 shares of LongFin following the asset purchase," Meenavalli told ET. At Monday's LongFin stock price of $70 a share, Bachchans' holding in LongFin is valued at $17.5 million (which at the current exchange rate is approximately Rs 114 crore).
Amitabh Bachchan's wealth, investments
Amitabh Bachchan, who was ranked 18th on the Forbes list of highest paid actors in the world last year, with earnings of over $20 million, already holds 3.4 per cent equity in Stampede Capital, a Hyderabad-based equity and currency broking, financial cloud and infrastructure services provider founded by Meenavalli in 1995.
RBI had announced the LRS scheme in February 2004 as a step towards further simplification and liberalisation of the foreign exchange facilities available to resident individuals. As per the initial scheme, resident individuals may remit up to $125,000 per financial year for any permitted capital and current account transactions or a combination of both.
Bollywood stalwart Amitabh Bachchan has starred in more than 150 movies in his 50-year career.

Bitcoin madness: Small-cap Longfin soars 2,000% after acquiring blockchain company
Small-cap financial technology company Longfin (Ticker: LFIN) is the latest example, soaring in volatile trading the last two days after saying it was buying a blockchain company, Ziddu.com last week. As a part of the acquisition, Longfin agreed to buy Ziddu from Meridian Enterprises in exchange for 2.5 million shares of the company. Adding to the confusion and volatility surrounding this move is that the filing for the deal notes that Meridian Enterprises, which sold Ziddu to Longfin, is a private Singapore company that is 95 per cent owned by Longfin's CEO and chairman, Venkat Meenavalli.
The company's stock closed up 230 per cent on December 15 and was up more than fivefold at one point Monday, bringing its two-day surge to more than 2,000 per cent. Longfin currently has 44 million shares outstanding, according to MoneyControl.
The company had its initial public offering on the Nasdaq on Dec. 13 and is based in New York. It describes itself as a technology company that uses artificial intelligence to deliver financial services for small companies.
For its part, Ziddu.com "presents a blockchain solution for micro lending and warehouse financing," according to a SEC filing. "It offers Trade and Micro finance in the form of warehouse Coins to the small and medium imports/exports against collateralization of traders warehouse receipts."
In 2016, it was the Panama Papers; in 2017 it was the Paradise Papers
Bachchan is India’s most venerated actor with a career spanning five decades. While most of Bachchan’s wealth is from his movies, according to Forbes magazine, the Panama Papers revealed the actor’s other business interests. Last year, the 75-year-old was linked to shipping companies in the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas as their director. The authorised capital of these companies ranged between $5,000 and $50,000, according to the documents, but they traded in ships worth millions of dollars.
Bachchan denied any wrongdoings then, suggesting that his name had been misused. “I have paid all my taxes including on monies spent by me overseas…,” he said in a statement.
The Paradise Papers reveal Bachchan’s involvement with a digital media company set up in Bermuda in 2002 along with other investors. The company was subsequently dissolved in 2005.
Bachchan has faced flak for his financial dealings in the past, too. In 1999, his firm ABCL Ltd, which produced films such as Mrityudand and Major Saab, racked up losses of over Rs 70 crore. A legal battle ensued with his creditors, including large public banks. It took the success of the television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati for Bachchan to finally pull himself out of debt.

Dear Parvathy, please don’t stop calling out misogyny in films even if you are trolled every time

In a panel discussion at the International Film Festival of Kerala, award-winning actor Parvathy shared her thoughts on how a woman is 'sexualised' and used as a property in films.

Hollywood is right in the middle of an uprising of sorts by women actors against powerful men, who indulged in sexual misconduct with impunity in the industry. The majority of Hollywood showbiz from leading male actors, directors, technicians, award functions and TV talks shows have joined the movement in an effort to instill fear of accountability in those, who so far had thought they can get away with anything they do.

In Indian cinema, a reckoning on such scale is nowhere in sight as, like Richa Chadda pointed out, the actors who risk exposing the unseen side of the powerful men in the industry, can kiss a goodbye to their careers.

In the meantime, a conversation about prevailing misogyny in the film industry, especially in Malayalam cinema, has begun. Thanks to a team of women actors for starting a conversation about a deep malaise in films that has unsettled a section of the filmmakers already.

In a panel discussion at the International Film Festival of Kerala, award-winning actor Parvathy shared her thoughts on how a woman is ‘sexualised’ and used as a ‘property’ in films. “I don’t want to say name of the film,” said Parvathy at first. However, on the insistence of filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, Parvathy named Mammootty’s Kasaba. “I, unfortunately, watched Kasaba. With all due respects to the technicians who worked in the film. I was definitely disappointed to watch an actor (Mammootty) par excellence, happen to say dialogues to a woman in a scene which was not only derogatory but most saddening.”

She pointed to the fact that when a big hero glorifies misogyny it makes other men think it is “sexy and cool” to talk to a woman that way. “We have discussed it a lot in the past and we will continue talking about it further. We would not want to allow such perception of heroism,” said Parvathy, who is also a member of Women in Cinema Collective.

Her remarks have courted controversy as she has been subjected to constant trolling by fans of Mammootty. What’s more depressing is the filmmakers of Kasaba have put out statements dismissing Parvathy’s valid concerns.

“There is no need to discuss a movie that was released a year ago. It is quite evident to all that this is merely a publicity stunt hoping to garner fame. Like a majority of people, I too believe that the actress’ criticism is not worthy of a response,” responded director Nithin Renji Panicker in a post on the Facebookpage of Kasaba. “Besides, I do not think that this actress is worthy of a retort from my end.”

Producer Joby George posted rather a provocative response to Parvathy’s opinion. “If Geethu aunty and Parvathy aunty tell me the dates of their birthday, I will show Kasaba in full house as my birthday gift.”

It is an irrefutable truth that films play a greater role in shaping the impressionable minds of society. Even as the filmmakers are well within their rights to defend their work, refusing to allay the concerns of Parvathy is a clear sign that they have no regrets about the fact that they had contributed to the most pressing problem. That their film, paying ode to patriarchy, may have somehow influenced a viewer to mistreat or speak derogatory words to a woman.

What’s worse is their efforts to discourage the women in the industry from speaking out against onscreen sexism by terming such discussions as a mere “publicity” stunts or calling them “aunties.”

While we are far away from exposing Harvey Weinsteins in the Indian film industry, it is about time we address the misogyny, male chauvinism, patriarchy in our films, so that, as Parvathy noted, the young generation can understand that it is not okay to disrespect women. “I grew up watching films that presented male perspectives of women,” Parvathy said, noting that she was fed the wrong idea about being a desirable woman that played into the hands of patriarchy.

“There aren’t many movies which explore the sexuality of women in Malayalam Cinema till now. It is through books that I gained the right perspective,” she revealed. “The lack of exposure to right perspective has caused me to be in abusive relationships. When a boy stubbed cigarette on my leg, I thought it was out of love. You know why because our films taught us slapping in the face was a way of expressing love.”
