My husband was murdered by BJP MLA and his men in jail: UP 'rape' victim's mother

His daughter alleged he was tortured in jail.
In less than 24 hours after attempting suicide by a rape victim along with family members outside Chief Minister House on Sunday, her father Surendra Singh alias Pappu, died under mysterious circumstances in Unnao district Hospital on Monday morning.

Taking serious note of the custodial death, the Yogi Adityanth government has instituted a judicial probe into the death of the rape victim’s father and suspended five police men, including SHO Makhi Police Station. Four accomplices of the BJP MLA, who had allegedly beaten the deceased to death, have been arrested by the Unnao Police.

“A judicial probe by a magistrate has been ordered into the custodial death. A team of three doctors would conduct the post-mortem. The DG Jails has been directed to submit a detailed report. The Unnao police has arrested four accused in the case,” said Arvind Kumar, Principal Secretary Home.

On April 3, the rape victim’s father was allegedly dragged from his house and beaten by the goons of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the BJP MLA from Bangermau in Unnao. Sengar and his brother are accused of raping his daughter in June last year for eight days. The deceased’s wife Asha alleged that her husband was being pressurized to withdraw the rape case against the MLA and his brother.

“When my husband refused to withdraw the case, BJP MLA’s brother and three others thrashed my husband mercilessly on April 3. Instead of registering a case against them, the Makhi Police arrested my injured husband in fake cases and lodged him in jail. My husband was murdered by the BJP MLA and his men in the jail,” charged Asha.

“The entire village had seen how badly my father was beaten. He was tortured in the jail too and denied medical help. For the past eight days, we have been running around to save my father but today we got his body. The Chief Minister is also responsible for the death of my father,” charged the rape victim.
Doctors who attended to the deceased in Unnao hospital claimed that the victim bore serious injury marks on his body. “He was under acute pain and vomiting perhaps due to internal injuries and haemorrhaging,” said Dr Atul Kumar.
“A girl going to coaching classes is shot in daylight. A woman alleging rape against BJP MLA attempts suicide outside CM’s House.  Girls and women are being terrorised and feel unsecure under the ‘encounter-spree’ government,” tweeted Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, demanding arrest of the BJP MLA.

Stunned by the custodial death of the rape victim’s father, the state government was seen scurrying for cover for failing to initiate action on Sunday when the rape victim and her family had come to meet the Chief Minister to seek justice and attempted suicide bid.

The BJP Spokesperson Srikant Sharma promised to initiate action against the accused once the inquiry report is submitted. “Those accused of beating her father have already been arrested and five policemen suspended for unfair probe,” said Sharma. He, however, remained non-committal on the arrest of the BJP MLA from Unnao Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in rape case.

Significantly, like four BJP Dalit MPs who have raised a banner of revolt against their own government, Kuldeep Singh Sengar too is a turncoat. He had won the 2007 and 2012 Assembly elections
from Bangermau in Unnao from Samajwadi Party ticket. He had joined the BJP just before 2017 assembly elections and won on the BJP ticket again.

IPL 2018: Dwayne Bravo's blitzkrieg gives Chennai Super Kings exactly the start they needed to their comeback season

Click Here For All News <~ Click Here
Mumbai's Wankhede stadium was brimming with an alluring sense of chaos that has been synonymous with cricket consumption in India, especially in recent times.

It was time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a cracker of an opener was scheduled on 7 April between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

At the toss, which Mahendra Singh Dhoni won and chose to bowl first, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma was asked about his team composition and he mentioned the inclusion of a young leg-spinner named Mayank Markande, who Rohit hoped would be the surprise package.
Markande was introduced just after the powerplay in which Chennai had managed to score a decent 42 runs for the loss of two wickets.
CSK's opener Ambati Rayudu, a surprise pick considering the presence of Murali Vijay in the squad, had hit a flurry of fours and was playing with a strike rate of 137 when he took guard to the IPL debutant.
After two dot balls, Rayudu decided to take the attack into the Mumbai camp, but misjudged a googly and was adjudged leg before. A couple of balls later, new batsman Kedar Jadhav caught another well-disguised googly on his pads, but received a reprieve after the umpire's decision of 'not out' wasn't contested by Mumbai.
Markande struck in his very next over, removing Dhoni from the equation with a wrong'un to leave the visitors, chasing a target of 166, tottering at 51/4 after eight overs.
CSK's score read 75/5 after 12 overs. Markande's figures were a respectable 2/15 after three straight overs.
The youngster measured his run up for his last over and waltzed in to bowl the first delivery of the 13th to the new batsman at the crease — Dwayne Bravo.
A lot happened in the 13th over.
Bravo danced down the track to launch a six over the bowler's head. Jadhav pulled a hamstring and had to go off the field and Deepak Chahar became Markande's third victim.
It was clearly Markande's day so far and he was well on his way to win a well-deserved Player of the Match award on his IPL debut. But Bravo had other plans.
Former Mumbai captain Harbhajan Singh joined Bravo in the middle and perished trying to improve the scoring.
Chennai needed 60 runs off the last five overs. This was not an impossible task despite having just three wickets in hand.

Earlier in the first innings, the Pandya brothers (Krunal and Hardik) scored an impressive 48 runs in the last five overs to take the Mumbai total to 165 after being 65/2 at the halfway point.
Mumbai's swashbuckling opening pair of Rohit and West Indies' Evin Lewis were kept in check by Shane Watson and Chahar, the highest wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018.
While there were doubts cast over the inclusion of the right-arm medium pacer over Shardul Thakur, Chahar dispelled such murmurs by picking up the wicket of Lewis with an inswinging delivery in his second over. This also became the first appearance of Decision Review System in the IPL.
Chennai's frontline spinners — Harbhajan, Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir — were treated with disdain by Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan.
With runs leaking, Dhoni turned to Bravo, who too had a pretty rough start to his bowling, going for three consecutive fours off the blade of Yadav.
Watson was brought back into the attack to break the Yadav-Kishan partnership, and he executed his orders to perfection and Tahir chipped in with a wicket that brought the Pandya brothers out to the middle in the 15th over.
Though Mumbai scored 48 runs off the next 30 balls, it was mainly off Mark Wood's bowling, whereas Bravo, Chennai's death-overs specialist, gave away a paltry 11 runs off his 18 deliveries.
Bravo seemed to be continuing from where he left off in the Big Bash League (BBL), in which captaining the Melbourne Renegades, he ended up becoming the tournament's highest wicket-taker.
Bravo's blitzkrieg innings
Chennai were struggling at 105/7 after 15 overs, chasing 165. Still the required run rate of 12 was gettable, but the lack of wickets was a worry for Dhoni's boys.
Mumbai captain Rohit turned to India's death-over specialist Jasprit Bumrah, who landed in a full delivery outside off that Bravo dispatched for six over extra cover. With Bumrah reining in the flow of runs immediately thereafter, the required run rate shot up to 12.75
Hardik's impressive 17th over ensured Bravo's natural game was cramped and with Wood picking up Mustafizur Rahman at long-leg, Chennai was now at a precarious 119/8 with 18 balls left and the required rate at 15.66.
In the 2017-18 season of the BBL, Bravo's batting wasn't exactly tested as he often batted during the slog overs. However, he managed to consistently score 20-30 runs. Even during last year's Caribbean Premier League (CPL), when Bravo led the Trinbago Knight Riders to the title, his bowling exploits made more noise than his batting.
The Dhoni-led Chennai clearly needed the batsman in Bravo to deliver on a sultry Saturday evening at the Wankhede and with Tahir set to take strike, Rohit trusted New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan to finish the job in the 18th over.
A single down to third man brought Bravo back on strike and he scored 19 over the next five balls that were a mix of full-length deliveries, a yorker, a short ball and a full toss.
Bravo's highest T20 score since 2017 was 26. He was now on 48 and Chennai needed 27 off 12.
Bumrah tried to bowl yorkers in his first two deliveries of the 19th over, but missed it completely and Bravo hoisted them for back-to-back sixes. He had a stroke of luck when trying to dig out Bumrah's first successful yorker in that over, as the ball trickled back onto the stumps, but somehow failed to disturb the woodwork.
Bravo dispatched the next low full toss beyond midwicket boundary for a six.
CSK now needed just seven runs off the last seven balls, but the match reached yet another anti-climax as Bravo mistimed the last ball of the penultimate over and  Rohit at mid-off held onto a regulation catch.

Jadhav, forced to retire hurt earlier, returned to face the last over from Mustafizur and hoped to repose the team management's faith that saw them spend Rs 7.8 crore at the auctions to rope in his services.
He fended off the first three balls, and then sent the next flying over short fine-leg to level the scores and used the crease to hit a boundary through cover to cap a memorable night for the Chennai side that made their way back into the tournament after a two-year suspension.
Bravo was rightfully awarded the Man of the Match and finally displayed a facet to his batting that had failed to surface over the past year. He took responsibility and delivered what the team wanted from their most reliable allrounder.
This was the start Chennai Super Kings needed to make a roaring return into the IPL. This was the start Chennai needed to temporarily silence criticism about the over-reliance on experienced players and not investing in young cricketers. This was the start Dhoni and Co needed to shift focus back on to the field.
More importantly, this was exactly the start that was needed to flag off this 51-day cricket extravaganza that will make or break careers of a number of cricketers from across the world, a tournament that has made heroes out of nobodies — the Indian Premier League.

When Salman Khan makes a mistake, it is 'blown out of proportion', says filmmaker-actor Mahesh Manjrekar "Salman is one guy who is ready to take the rap. But when he makes a mistake, it is blown out of proportion," actor-filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar told PTI. Manjrekar and Salman have worked together in films such as Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and Jai Ho among others. "Salman is more than a friend to me. I don't know what transpired (in the case), the courts are there to decide. But today if you ask me what is your wish, I would say he should be released tomorrow. He doesn't deserve to be in jail. From two days my wife is asking me what is going to happen, and I am like, he will be out soon," he added.

Salman Khan blackbuck poaching case updates: Actor Salman Khan was on Saturday granted bail by a district and sessions court in Jodhpur in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in which he has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Immediately after his release, Khan, 52, was driven under police escort to the airport in Jodhpur, a police official said.  Khan walked out of the jail after the prison authorities received the court papers granting him bail, the official said. Khan is now en route Mumbai.

District and Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi heard the arguments of prosecution and defence which lasted for about an hour and pronounced the order at around 3 pm, a defence counsel said. Khan's sisters — Alvira and Arpita — were present during the hearing. The actor had spent two nights in the Jodhpur Central Jail after his sentencing on Thursday.

The actor was convicted by a trial court and sentenced to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks during the shooting of "Hum Saath Saath Hain" in Jodhpur.

Salman Khan granted bail by Jodhpur Court on surety of Rs 50,000, reports News18.

As per latest reports, the bail plea order pronouncement has now been pushed to 3 pm. Earlier on Saturday, both prosecution and defense arguments were concluded in the Jodhpur court, before the judge said he would reserve the order till after lunch.

The Jodhpur Sessions Court is likely to pronounce actor Salman Khan's bail plea order by 3 pm. Earlier on Saturday, both prosecution and defense arguments were concluded, before the judge announced he would reserve the order till after lunch. The actor has already spent two nights in the Jodhpur Central Jail since he was convicted in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case on Thursday.

The prosecution on Saturday argued that Salman Khan's bail plea application should be rejected on the basis of eyewitness accounts, which they said proves the actor's guilt in killing two blackbucks in October 1998. The defense counsel, on the hand, argued that the eyewitness accounts are not true and filled with several discrepancies.

Day two of actor Salman Khan's bail plea hearing has begun on Saturday morning with Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi to continue preside over the court proceedings.

District and Sessions judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi will be hearing Salman Khan's's bail plea on Saturday. The routine transfer of judges will not impact the bail plea, say reports.

Ahead of Salman Khan's bail hearing on Saturday, Sessions judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi was transferred overnight, along with 87 other district judges. He has been transferred from Jodhpur to Siroh. According to NDTV, he will be replaced by Chandra Kumar Songara, district and sessions judge of Bhilwara.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan spent another night in a prison in Jodhpur after a court on Friday decided to reserve its order on his bail plea until Saturday.

The actor, who was on Thursday convicted by a trial court and sentenced to five years in prison in a 1998 blackbuck poaching case, spent a second night in the Jodhpur Central Jail.

The district and sessions court heard arguments on the suspension of sentence and bail application before deferring the matter till Saturday.

The defence and prosecution will present their arguments at 10.30 am on Saturday.

The magistrate Ravindra Kumar Joshi also sought the record of the case from the lower court.

In his arguments, defence counsel Mahesh Bora said there were various loopholes in the investigation. He argued that no investigation in any of the cases of poaching proved that Salman used firearms.

"We have argued that the eyewitness in the case was not reliable," Bora said, adding, "It was never proved that he had firearms. Even the pellets recovered from him did not corroborate the story of the prosecution. Also, the first post-mortem report was completely dumped."

"Besides this, he (Salman Khan) has been acquitted in all the other cases of poaching on the basis of the prosecution's failure to prove the allegations and in such a condition, his sentence should be suspended," he argued.

But objecting to the defence counsel's arguments, public prosecutor Pokar Ram Bishnoi urged the court to seek the record of the case from the trial court and go through it.

He argued that this was the only case where an eyewitness was available and the prosecution has succeeded in proving the crime beyond any doubt.

The actor is alleged to have shot and killed blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the night of 1 October, 1998 during the shooting of the film "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

While convicting Salman, the trial court acquitted his Bollywood colleagues Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre and a local, Dushyant Singh, giving them the "benefit of doubt" for the incident in October 1998.

Meanwhile, the Bollywood star's sisters, Alvira and Arpita, met him in the jail. Later, Preity Zinta, who has acted with Salman Khan in several films, also paid him a visit.

According to jail superintendent Vikram Singh, Zinta visited Salman Khan in the afternoon. A meeting was arranged in the visitor's room, where they had a chat for about half an hour

WhatsApp Update Brings Status Updates to 'Today View' on iPhones

WhatsApp for iPhone has improved the voice messaging feature

The iPhone update is available for devices running iOS 7.0 and higher

The app recently received a new Change Number feature on Android beta

WhatsApp for iPhone has received an update that brings with a couple of new changes. The app now lets you see recent status updates in the WhatsApp widget in your iPhone's Today View. The WhatsApp for iPhone update also enhances the voice messaging feature that will now continue to play your voice messages if you switch to another app or turn your screen off.

You can avail the changes by downloading the updated (v2.18.40) version of the app for iPhone; it works with devices running iOS 7.0 and later. To recall, last week, the app received a new Android beta version that added a feature to notify contacts on shifting to a new number.

As for the other change that recently made its way to the platform, the new WhatsApp Change Number feature is rolling out through a server-side update to WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.18.97.
We were able to spot the same at the time of filing the story on one of our Android devices. The new addition allows you to notify all contacts, contacts that you've chats with, or any particular contacts you wish, about your having switched from your old number to a new one.
To begin with the new Change Number feature, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Change number. After that, tap the Next button from the top-right corner, enter your old and new phone numbers, tap the Next button again, and then enable the Notify my contacts option. This brings options, namely All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, and Custom. Regardless of selecting any of the three options, all your groups you are part of will be notified. The feature also details the number of contacts who will be notified about your new number

SC/ST ruling: Bharat bandh hits life in Punjab, Odisha; top 10 developments

Dalit organisations across the country have called a 'Bharat bandh' today to protest a recent Supreme Court ruling diluting the  Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

Early in the day, movement of trains in Odisha's Sambalpur was blocked by protesters on Monday, according to reports by news agency .

The Bharat bandh has already brought Punjab to a standstill, as CBSE has postponed the board exams scheduled for April 2, and transport services have been suspended. According to an Indian Expressreport, several army units have been kept on a standby, should the situation take an ugly turn. Internet services in the state were suspended on Sunday and will remain so through Monday.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, will later in the day hear a review petition filed on the matter by the government. The Centre is likely to tell the apex court that dilution of the Act will render it ineffective and prevent the dispensing of justice to the marginalised Dalit and tribal communities.

On March 20, the apex court had introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the Act while directing that there would be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law.

The Supreme Court said that the change was brought to protect honest public servants discharging duties from being blackmailed with false cases under the Act. The apex court said government servants should not be arrested without prior sanction and private citizens, too, should be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.

Here are the top 10 developments around the so-called dilution of the Act and the Bharat bandh called by Dalit organisations across the country:

1. CBSE postpones class 10, 12 exams in Punjab: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has postponed class 12 and class 10 examinations in Punjab scheduled to be held on Monday at the request of the state government in view of the 'Bharat Bandh'.

The board said it had received a letter of request, dated April 1, 2018, from the director general (school education) of the Punjab government to postpone all its examinations scheduled to be held on account of apprehensions of law and order problems and other disturbances during the 'Bharat Bandh'.

2. Schools to be shut in Punjab: The Punjab government has also decided to keep all schools shut for the day, the CBSEsaid referring to the letter of the state government.

"Taking congnisance of the letter of the director general (school education), the CBSE decided to postpone all class 12 and 10 examinations scheduled for April 2 , 2018 in the state of Punjab," it said in a statement issued late in the night.

3. Exams unaffected in rest of the country: "Exams will carry on as per schedule in UT of Chandigarh and rest of the country," CBSE said. The next date of the examinations in Punjab will be announced soon by the board, it added.

4. Transport services suspended: An official spokesperson of the Punjab government in Chandigarh said the public transport services across the state had been suspended in view of the bandh call.

5. Gehlot says SC decision will prevent justice: Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot on Sunday said the Centre had decided to file a review petition against the Supreme Court's decision on the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 (SC/ST Act), contending it would not be able to provide justice to the suppressed.

"Supreme Court's decision on SC/ST Protection Act would not be able to provide justice to the suppressed people, and those accused and deserving of punishment would be saved. Union government took cognizance of it, and the Law Ministry with our ministry, took the decision that review petition will be filed against the court's decision," Gehlot told ANI.

He also assured the minorities and the suppressed castes that their right would be safeguarded under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and urged all groups that have called for a Bharat Bandh on Monday, to help maintain peace and harmony in the country.

6. What is the point of a bandh, Pawan asks: Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday questioned the need for an all-India bandh against the Supreme Court's ruling on the SC/ST Act, asking "What is the point of organising a Bharat Bandh? The government is positively going to file the review petition".

7. Rahul Gandhi says atrociticities against Dalits increasing: Congress President Rahul Gandhi questioned the Supreme Court's decision to water down the Act at a time when atrocities against Dalits ''are increasing''.  "On the one hand, atrocities are increasing against the Dalits and tribals, and on the other the Act is being diluted. The Congress President has supported and said he will take action," he said.

8. Opposition leaders meet Ram Nath Kovind: Several Opposition leaders met the President on Wednesday to communicate their postion against the SC order. They submitted a memorandum citing National Crime Records Bureaudata and claimed that a crime is committed against Dalit women every 15 minutes in the country and six Dalit women were raped every day.

"Rape cases against Dalit women have doubled from 2007 to 2017 and a 66 per cent increase in atrocities against Dalits have been reported in the last 10 years. This situation has only worsened in the last 3-4 years under the regime of the present government at the Centre," it said.

9. 'Dilution will embolden attacks on Dalits': DMK leader T K S Elangovan said dilution of the Act will embolden offenders. "Media is coming out with stories on attacks on Dalits and weaker sections. This is not a good sign. They should see that the law is not diluted. We want the President to intervene."

CPI(M) leader T K Rangarajan said they urged the President to ask the government to file a review petition.

"We think that he will take some immediate action and some justice will be done. We told him that conviction rate is very low, atrocities against Dalits, Adivasis, and women are increasing," he said.

10. Supreme Court's says Act may 'perpetuate casteism': On March 20, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no absolute bar on granting an anticipatory bail under the Act. The apex court said that to prevent the harassment of government servants it was prudent to have a high ranking officer to first ascertain whether the facts add up to demand an arrest.

The Supreme Court Bench, comprising judges Adarsh Kumar Goel and Uday Umesh Lalit further noted that to avoid false implication of an innocent, preliminary enquiry will be done by the DSP to find out whether the allegations make out a case under the Atrocities Act and that the allegations are not frivolous.

According to a report published by The Wire, the Supreme Court also emphasised that the Act may even “perpetuate casteism” and how there was a need to curb “false implication of innocent citizens on caste lines”.
