WhatsApp Update Brings Status Updates to 'Today View' on iPhones

WhatsApp for iPhone has improved the voice messaging feature

The iPhone update is available for devices running iOS 7.0 and higher

The app recently received a new Change Number feature on Android beta

WhatsApp for iPhone has received an update that brings with a couple of new changes. The app now lets you see recent status updates in the WhatsApp widget in your iPhone's Today View. The WhatsApp for iPhone update also enhances the voice messaging feature that will now continue to play your voice messages if you switch to another app or turn your screen off.

You can avail the changes by downloading the updated (v2.18.40) version of the app for iPhone; it works with devices running iOS 7.0 and later. To recall, last week, the app received a new Android beta version that added a feature to notify contacts on shifting to a new number.

As for the other change that recently made its way to the platform, the new WhatsApp Change Number feature is rolling out through a server-side update to WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.18.97.
We were able to spot the same at the time of filing the story on one of our Android devices. The new addition allows you to notify all contacts, contacts that you've chats with, or any particular contacts you wish, about your having switched from your old number to a new one.
To begin with the new Change Number feature, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Change number. After that, tap the Next button from the top-right corner, enter your old and new phone numbers, tap the Next button again, and then enable the Notify my contacts option. This brings options, namely All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, and Custom. Regardless of selecting any of the three options, all your groups you are part of will be notified. The feature also details the number of contacts who will be notified about your new number

SC/ST ruling: Bharat bandh hits life in Punjab, Odisha; top 10 developments

Movement of train in Odisha's Sambalpur blocked to protest against Supreme Court's decision on SC/ST Protection Act. Photo: ANI

Dalit organisations across the country have called a 'Bharat bandh' today to protest a recent Supreme Court ruling diluting the  Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.

Early in the day, movement of trains in Odisha's Sambalpur was blocked by protesters on Monday, according to reports by news agency .

The Bharat bandh has already brought Punjab to a standstill, as CBSE has postponed the board exams scheduled for April 2, and transport services have been suspended. According to an Indian Expressreport, several army units have been kept on a standby, should the situation take an ugly turn. Internet services in the state were suspended on Sunday and will remain so through Monday.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, will later in the day hear a review petition filed on the matter by the government. The Centre is likely to tell the apex court that dilution of the Act will render it ineffective and prevent the dispensing of justice to the marginalised Dalit and tribal communities.

On March 20, the apex court had introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the Act while directing that there would be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law.

The Supreme Court said that the change was brought to protect honest public servants discharging duties from being blackmailed with false cases under the Act. The apex court said government servants should not be arrested without prior sanction and private citizens, too, should be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.

Here are the top 10 developments around the so-called dilution of the Act and the Bharat bandh called by Dalit organisations across the country:

1. CBSE postpones class 10, 12 exams in Punjab: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has postponed class 12 and class 10 examinations in Punjab scheduled to be held on Monday at the request of the state government in view of the 'Bharat Bandh'.

The board said it had received a letter of request, dated April 1, 2018, from the director general (school education) of the Punjab government to postpone all its examinations scheduled to be held on account of apprehensions of law and order problems and other disturbances during the 'Bharat Bandh'.

2. Schools to be shut in Punjab: The Punjab government has also decided to keep all schools shut for the day, the CBSEsaid referring to the letter of the state government.

"Taking congnisance of the letter of the director general (school education), the CBSE decided to postpone all class 12 and 10 examinations scheduled for April 2 , 2018 in the state of Punjab," it said in a statement issued late in the night.

3. Exams unaffected in rest of the country: "Exams will carry on as per schedule in UT of Chandigarh and rest of the country," CBSE said. The next date of the examinations in Punjab will be announced soon by the board, it added.

4. Transport services suspended: An official spokesperson of the Punjab government in Chandigarh said the public transport services across the state had been suspended in view of the bandh call.

5. Gehlot says SC decision will prevent justice: Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot on Sunday said the Centre had decided to file a review petition against the Supreme Court's decision on the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 (SC/ST Act), contending it would not be able to provide justice to the suppressed.

"Supreme Court's decision on SC/ST Protection Act would not be able to provide justice to the suppressed people, and those accused and deserving of punishment would be saved. Union government took cognizance of it, and the Law Ministry with our ministry, took the decision that review petition will be filed against the court's decision," Gehlot told ANI.

He also assured the minorities and the suppressed castes that their right would be safeguarded under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and urged all groups that have called for a Bharat Bandh on Monday, to help maintain peace and harmony in the country.

6. What is the point of a bandh, Pawan asks: Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday questioned the need for an all-India bandh against the Supreme Court's ruling on the SC/ST Act, asking "What is the point of organising a Bharat Bandh? The government is positively going to file the review petition".

7. Rahul Gandhi says atrociticities against Dalits increasing: Congress President Rahul Gandhi questioned the Supreme Court's decision to water down the Act at a time when atrocities against Dalits ''are increasing''.  "On the one hand, atrocities are increasing against the Dalits and tribals, and on the other the Act is being diluted. The Congress President has supported and said he will take action," he said.

8. Opposition leaders meet Ram Nath Kovind: Several Opposition leaders met the President on Wednesday to communicate their postion against the SC order. They submitted a memorandum citing National Crime Records Bureaudata and claimed that a crime is committed against Dalit women every 15 minutes in the country and six Dalit women were raped every day.

"Rape cases against Dalit women have doubled from 2007 to 2017 and a 66 per cent increase in atrocities against Dalits have been reported in the last 10 years. This situation has only worsened in the last 3-4 years under the regime of the present government at the Centre," it said.

9. 'Dilution will embolden attacks on Dalits': DMK leader T K S Elangovan said dilution of the Act will embolden offenders. "Media is coming out with stories on attacks on Dalits and weaker sections. This is not a good sign. They should see that the law is not diluted. We want the President to intervene."

CPI(M) leader T K Rangarajan said they urged the President to ask the government to file a review petition.

"We think that he will take some immediate action and some justice will be done. We told him that conviction rate is very low, atrocities against Dalits, Adivasis, and women are increasing," he said.

10. Supreme Court's says Act may 'perpetuate casteism': On March 20, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no absolute bar on granting an anticipatory bail under the Act. The apex court said that to prevent the harassment of government servants it was prudent to have a high ranking officer to first ascertain whether the facts add up to demand an arrest.

The Supreme Court Bench, comprising judges Adarsh Kumar Goel and Uday Umesh Lalit further noted that to avoid false implication of an innocent, preliminary enquiry will be done by the DSP to find out whether the allegations make out a case under the Atrocities Act and that the allegations are not frivolous.

According to a report published by The Wire, the Supreme Court also emphasised that the Act may even “perpetuate casteism” and how there was a need to curb “false implication of innocent citizens on caste lines”.

BR Ambedkar gets a new name in Uttar Pradesh as Yogi government adds `Ramji`

Acting on the recommendations of UP Governor Ram Naik, the government has decided to introduce `Ramji` as Ambedkar`s middle name.

In an unprecedented move, Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to change the name of the father of the Indian Constitution, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, in all official correspondence. According to reports, Ambedkar will now be referred to as Bhim Rao Ramji Ambedkar.

Acting on the recommendations of Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, the government has decided to introduce ‘Ramji’ as the middle name of Ambedkar. Henceforth, all official correspondence of the Uttar Pradesh government will refer to Ambedkar with the new name.

Targeting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the issue, the Samajwadi Party accused the state government of politicising the Dalit icon. SP leader Deepak Mishra said that the move by the BJP government is aimed at changing the perception of the party being anti-Ambedkar.
He said that the BJP does not respect Ambedkar or his ideology but was indulging in such acts to target specific votebank.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), however, rubbished the allegations. RSS thinker Rakesh Sinha claimed that the UP government has merely decided to use the real name of the father of the Indian Constitution, saying there was no politics involved in the move.

Meanwhile, reports said that the UP government had passed an order to all departments in this regard, and had even asked the Allahabad High Court and its Lucknow bench to make the change in all documents and records.

The move was reportedly started by Governor Ram Naik in December 2017. He had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath in this regard, reported The Times of India.

Ramji was the name of Dr Ambedkar’s father.

Sanctioned 3,250 Crores As Part Of Consortium': ICICI Bank Explains Exposure To Videocon Group

All News For - Aapkasamachar

ICICI Bank said it only sanctioned Rs 3,250 crore to Videocon group, which was less than 10% of the total consortium facility in April 2012.

ICICI Bank, the country's largest private sector bank, on Wednesday sought to put to rest rumours that its CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar allegedly favoured Videocon Group in its lending practices. Terming the rumours "malicious and unfounded", ICICI Bank said: "ICICI Bank Board reviews the Bank's internal processes for credit approval and finds them robust.

The Board also expresses and reposes full faith and confidence in its MD & CEO, Ms. Chanda Kochhar." ICICI Bank in its statement also said that "similar rumours had first surfaced in the mid-2016 and had been appropriately responded to".

The statement came after multiple reports had last week alluded to alleged conflict of interest in ICICI Bank's lending to Videocon. Explaining its current exposure to the Videocon group, ICICI Bank said it had sanctioned a Rs 3,250 crore to Videocon as part of a consortium of lenders. ICICI Bank said the group of banks was not led by it.

ICICI Bank's board reviewed the bank's internal processes on Wednesday and noted that the bank has "a well-structured and standardised credit approval process". "No individual employee, whatever may be his or her position, has the ability to influence the credit decision at the Bank," ICICI Bank said.

ICICI Bank Board reviews the Bank's internal processes for credit approval and finds them robust. The Board also expresses and reposes full faith and confidence in its MD & CEO, Ms. Chanda Kochhar

There have been some malicious and unfounded rumours in the past few days casting insinuations on ICICI Bank Ltd. and its MD & CEO. Similar rumours had first surfaced in the mid-2016 and had been appropriately responded to. Nevertheless these have resurfaced in the recent past to malign the Bank.

In that context, the Board of ICICI Bank today reviewed the internal processes of the Bank and also the details of the exposure to the Videocon group.

1. The Board has noted that the Bank has a well-structured and standardised credit approval process, where multiple independent departments are involved in providing independent credit risk rating, doing credit appraisal, credit approvals and monitoring the proposals.

The Bank's credit approval authorisation framework is laid down by the Board of Directors. The larger exposures are approved by the Credit Committee of the Board. The majority of Credit Committee members are independent directors of the Bank. The Chairman of the Credit Committee, till as late as June 2015, was always a non-Executive Director. Based on the above, it can be concluded that there are adequate checks and balances in loan appraisal, rating and approval processes within the Bank, both from the control as well as from a governance perspective.

Given this architecture, no individual employee, whatever may be his or her position, has the ability to influence the credit decision at the Bank.

2. With regard to ICICI Bank's current exposure to Videocon group, the Board also recorded that:

a. In 2012, a consortium of over 20 banks and financial institutions sanctioned facilities to the Videocon group (Videocon Industries Ltd. and 12 of its subsidiaries/ associates as co-obligors) for a debt consolidation programme and for the group's oil and gas capital expenditure programme aggregating approximately Rs. 40,000 crore.

b. ICICI Bank's current exposure to the Videocon group is part of this syndicated consortium arrangement.

c. ICICI Bank was not the lead bank for this consortium and the Bank only sanctioned its share of facilities aggregating approximately Rs. 3250 crore which was less than 10% of the total consortium facility in April 2012.

d. After the preparation of the Information Memorandum and the initial due diligence for the financing programme by the lead arrangers and after the sanction of the facilities by the lead bank, the Credit Committee of ICICI Bank in 2012 sanctioned its share of facilities in the syndicated arrangement to the Videocon group.

e. This Committee was chaired by the then Chairman of ICICI Bank and it included independent and working Directors of the Bank. It is important to note that Ms. Chanda Kochhar was not the Chairperson of this Committee.

f. The Terms and Conditions offered for these loans are similar to those offered by the other banks in the consortium, ruling out the possibility of any special benefit to the borrower by ICICI Bank.

g. It is important to note here that all banks including ICICI Bank disbursed the Rupee Term Loan into the common escrow pool account being maintained for this purpose by the lead bank.

Hence the Board concluded that there is no question or scope of any favouritism, nepotism or quid-pro-quo.

3. The Bank desires to clarify that none of the investors of NuPower Renewables are borrowers of ICICI Bank.

4. ICICI Bank is regulated and supervised by various regulatory bodies and authorities. In that context the Bank receives various queries from time to time which are appropriately responded to.

On looking at all the above facts, the Board has come to the conclusion that there is no question of any quid pro quo/ nepotism/ conflict of interest as is being alleged in various rumours. The Board has full confidence and reposes full faith in the Bank's MD & CEO, Ms. Chanda Kochhar. The Board also commends the entire management team under the leadership of the MD & CEO for their hard work and dedication. We would urge you not to be misled by these rumours which are being spread to malign the Bank and its top management.

About ICICI Bank: ICICI Bank Ltd (NYSE:IBN) is India's largest private sector bank by consolidated assets. The Bank's consolidated total assets stood at US$ 165 billion at December 31, 2017. ICICI Bank's subsidiaries include India's leading private sector insurance, asset management and securities brokerage companies, and among the country's largest private equity firms. It is present across 17 countries, including India.'
