Padmaavat movie review: This Deepika Padukone starrer is spectacular

🔊 Join Our Whatsapp Group To Get Latest News

Padmavati movie review: Deepika Padukone has never been lovelier. She wears those stunning costumes, never letting them wear her, even if her waist is decorously covered in the Ghoomar song.

Padmaavat movie cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Jim Sarbh, Anupriya Goenka, Raza Murad

Padmaavat movie director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Padmaavat movie rating: 2.5 stars

All those agitating over how Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat would trample all over Rajput pride, you may rest easy: the director didn’t need a memo from the Karni Sena and all the other self-styled ‘armies’ on keeping it ‘sanskaari’ – his entire film is a memo from the Karni Sena and all the other self-styled ‘armies’ on keeping it ‘sanskaari’ – his entire film is a relentlessly opulent, magnificently-mounted paean to Rajput ‘aan baan shaan’.
Here’s how it goes, just in case you are one of those rare people who haven’t been breathlessly following the film’s troubles: the Rajput king Ratan Singh (Kapoor) is the hero, the Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji (Singh) is the villain, and the object of their mutual adoration is the utterly gorgeous Padmavati, who will always and forever be a good Indian girl, and later, wife. When we see her first, she is fleet of foot and clear of eye, a joyous free spirit who has a will of her own.She ends up committing ‘jauhar’, her life and death circumscribed by male notions of honour.
If that’s not patriarchy, then I’m Queen Padmavati, who of course did not exist. And while we of course cannot judge the actions of the dramatis personae who presumably lived in the 13th century (even if they were mythical creatures, created by the poet Malik Mohammad Jayasi) by present day gender roles, we do see that the director has a problem on his hands: how do you show a beautiful queen jumping into a pyre, along with hundreds of her compatriots (a shot has a pregnant woman and a little girl), without glorifying the act?
One way of doing it is to stuff the beginning and the middle acts with so much glitter and glamour that we are expected to be swept away. Which we dutifully do: there’s a kind of beauty in the way Bhansali creates his frames, even if your eye begins to be overwhelmed by it.

Deepika Padukone has never been lovelier. She wears those stunning costumes, never letting them wear her, even if her waist is decorously covered in the Ghoomar song (alert viewers may see a flash of the said body part in other parts of the film). Shahid Kapoor sports kohl in his eyes, and clearly articulated muscles in his chest, often left bare. But this film belongs to Ranveer Singh’s Khilji, who bites into mounds of meat (serving well the prototype of the Muslim savage) and his part with such relish that you can taste it.
If it hadn’t been for the extreme reactions from a bunch of extreme reactionaries-cum-buffoons which nearly derailed the release the film, Bhansali’s latest opus would have been just another Bhansali extravganza, full of costumery and puffery. But given that all art is political, even if it is dressed up art, Padmaavat becomes more than it is, because the director chooses to outline the vileness of his antagonist, and underline the ‘pati-vrata ness’ of Rani Padmavati.
Far from any subtle touches, Bhansali’s black-and-white delineation of the good Hindu and the bad Muslim (who could also, gasp, swing both ways) is so stark that that we are left with no illusion about which part of the political firmament he wants to be on the right side of.
Finally, and we can’t get away from this, the question for us while watching this fresh version of the oldest tale in the book – ‘ek tha raja, ek thi rani, dono mar gaye, khatam kahani’—is, how do we deal with the fact of a woman being forced to jump into a pyre to save the ‘honour’ of her husband, and her people?

Of course, Padmaavat is spectacular: no one can do spectacle like Bhansali. This was what he was born to do.
You can easily delight in it while the going is good. But nearly three hours of it, and looping rhetoric around what constitutes Rajput valour can and does become tiresome. And that compulsion to make ‘sati’ so good-looking, when the singeing of flesh can be so gruesome, is troubling.
If there’s one thing that keeps us from brooding too much through the film, it is Ranveer Singh. Not once does he try to make us like him, and that makes us like him even more.
As a performer, he has always been unpredictable, in a good way. As Bhansali’s Khilji, he is electric. And try as anyone might, so is the attraction between the outsider and the queen: it is their doomed love story, whose embers rain on the screen, that we take away with us.

Padmaavat finally gets an official release date, to arrive on January 25

Controversy ridden Padmaavat will finally hit screens on January 25. This Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh starrer has had a difficult journey right from the beginning.

The makers of controversy-ridden period epic Padmaavat (previously Padmavati) on Sunday officially announced the film’s release date. The film will hit screens on January 25.

Padmaavat has had a difficult journey right from the beginning, during production to its release. Previously, the makers had postponed the film indefinitely from its original release date of December 1 due to widespread protests by right-wing organisations across the country. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone had. received death threats and bounties on their heads.

Announcing the new release date, all the three actors, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh took to their Twitter handles and shared an updated poster of Padmaavat.

Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO, Viacom18, said in a statement, “Padmaavat is a cinematic masterpiece in every sense of the word. We hope that we will surpass the expectations of our fans from across the world. We are humbled with the immense support we have received from the government authorities, the Central Board of Film Certification and the entire film fraternity. Padmaavat is a story that’s inherently Indian in its context, ethos and values. In the past, international filmmakers have presented Indian stories such as Gandhi, Life of Pi, The Jungle Book and others to the world. We believe that this is the right time for us to truly make in India and show the world a tale that every Indian is proud of.”

Padmaavat is our magnum opus – a tribute to Rajput valour created at a scale that will be a delight to watch on the large screen. The film will witness a mega-scale release across maximum screens, languages & formats covering 2D, 3D & Imax 3D in India & the world. It carries the trademark style of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, wherein each frame of the film is a timeless work of art. We have partnered with Paramount Pictures to distribute the film across select international markets including non-traditional territories.

Padmaavat will create its own benchmark as an immortal classic when it releases across the world on the 25th of January,” added Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director and the person behind it all, said, “Padmaavat is a dream come true for me. I have always been fascinated by the stories of honor, valor and vigor of our great Rajput warriors that have been captured so beautifully in our literature and this movie is my homage to those glorious stories.

I would also like to thank the entire film fraternity for supporting Viacom18 and Bhansali Productions through the entire production and pre-release phase and hope they like the film they so supported.”

As we saw in the trailer last year, the film stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. Now that the release date is confirmed, we can’t wait to finally see the film.

Three sadhvis allegedly gangraped in Nawada ashram

District superintendent of police Vikas Barman said that according to an FIR lodged by the three sadhvis they were allegedly gangraped by the 'sanchalak' of Sant Kutir Ashram.

Three sadhvis were allegedly gangraped at an ashram in Bihar’s Nawada district and its ‘sanchalak’ (head) is among the accused, the police said today.

The sanchalak and the other accused by the sadhvis are absconding and police are on the look out for them, the police said.

District superintendent of police Vikas Barman said that according to an FIR lodged by the three sadhvis they were allegedly gangraped by the ‘sanchalak’ of Sant Kutir Ashram and about 12 of his men on December 4, 2017.
The FIR was lodged against the ashram head Tapasyanand and the others allegedly involved in the crime on Wednesday (January 10, 2018), he said.
Tapsyanand had been charged with raping sadhvis at an ashram in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh too. He fled from there and took shelter at the Sant Kurit Ashram here, which has been functioning for the past seven to eight years, after Basti police started searching for him in the case, the SP said.
The Basti police raided the ashram here on Thali Mor on January 9 but Tapasyanand managed to give the slip again, SP said.
The incident came to light yesterday when the three women were taken to the sadar hospital for medical examination yesterday.
The matter is being investigated, SP said adding that police are conducting raids to nab the accused. The Ashram has been sealed and nobody is being allowed to enter its premises.

Padmavat row: Over 90 fringe group members protesting outside CBFC headquarters detained, say Mumbai Police

The fringe outfit has also announced a bounty of Rs 5 crore to anyone who beheads Bhansali and chops off Padukone's nose.

The Mumbai Police has detained over 90 members of the Shri Karni Sena and other fringe groups who were protesting outside the Central Board of Film Certificate (CBFC )headquarters in South Mumbai.
The members were protesting against the clearance given by CBFC to screen the movie, Padmavat in theatres later this month. In the past, owing to the violent protests and death threats given out to the cast of the period drama, the Mumbai Police had extended security to the actors and director of the movie. According to the police while director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was put under security cover after protesters from alleged Rajput fringe groups vandalised the sets a few months ago, the actors – Deepika Padukoneand Ranveer Singh were extended security in November after the self-proclaimed guardians of the Rajputclan, Shri Karni Sena threatened to physically harm the actress. The fringe outfit has also announced a bounty of Rs 5 crore to anyone who beheads Bhansali and chops off Padukone’s nose.

“Bhansali has been under security cover for a while now but owing to threat perception security has been extended to the actors,” said another senior official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The police have provided armed men and a convoy to Bhansali and similar security arrangements are provided to the actors. ” All the two actors will be under round-the-clock security cover until the release of the movie. Post the release, their security will be assessed and the cover will stay until threat security will be assessed and the cover will stay until threat perception continues,” added the official.
Other than the security cover by police, Bhansali has also been advised to deploy additional guards on the sets and promotional events. Bhansali’s December release casts Padukone in the titular role. Singh features as Sultan Alauddin Khilji and actor Shahid Kapoor plays Padukone’s husband Maharawal Ratan Singh. The fringe outfits have been protesting claiming the movie brings dishonour to Rajputs and their queen Rani Padmini.
