Padmavat row: Over 90 fringe group members protesting outside CBFC headquarters detained, say Mumbai Police

The fringe outfit has also announced a bounty of Rs 5 crore to anyone who beheads Bhansali and chops off Padukone's nose.

The Mumbai Police has detained over 90 members of the Shri Karni Sena and other fringe groups who were protesting outside the Central Board of Film Certificate (CBFC )headquarters in South Mumbai.
The members were protesting against the clearance given by CBFC to screen the movie, Padmavat in theatres later this month. In the past, owing to the violent protests and death threats given out to the cast of the period drama, the Mumbai Police had extended security to the actors and director of the movie. According to the police while director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was put under security cover after protesters from alleged Rajput fringe groups vandalised the sets a few months ago, the actors – Deepika Padukoneand Ranveer Singh were extended security in November after the self-proclaimed guardians of the Rajputclan, Shri Karni Sena threatened to physically harm the actress. The fringe outfit has also announced a bounty of Rs 5 crore to anyone who beheads Bhansali and chops off Padukone’s nose.

“Bhansali has been under security cover for a while now but owing to threat perception security has been extended to the actors,” said another senior official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The police have provided armed men and a convoy to Bhansali and similar security arrangements are provided to the actors. ” All the two actors will be under round-the-clock security cover until the release of the movie. Post the release, their security will be assessed and the cover will stay until threat security will be assessed and the cover will stay until threat perception continues,” added the official.
Other than the security cover by police, Bhansali has also been advised to deploy additional guards on the sets and promotional events. Bhansali’s December release casts Padukone in the titular role. Singh features as Sultan Alauddin Khilji and actor Shahid Kapoor plays Padukone’s husband Maharawal Ratan Singh. The fringe outfits have been protesting claiming the movie brings dishonour to Rajputs and their queen Rani Padmini.

Padmavat’ gets 25 January release date, causes chaos for upcoming films

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period saga ‘Padmavat’ (earlier ‘Padmavati’) finds a release date, is set to clash with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Padman’ on 25 January

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period saga Padmavat (earlier Padmavati) has clearly dealt with more than its share of controversy but the film finally has a release date. The Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor-starrer will arrive in theatres on 25 January for the extended Republic Day weekend, a spokesperson from Viacom18 Motion Pictures, co-producer of Padmavat, said on condition of anonymity.

In November last year, the studio had voluntarily deferred the December release of the film as protests on its historical accuracy continued across the country.
“We’re looking to have an official announcement ideally later this week. The first thing was to put a release date out, we will now begin the marketing,” the person said.
The Republic Day weekend was a release window floating around for quite some time. While trade experts had ruled out that possibility until last week given that both Akshay Kumar’s Padman and Neeraj Pandey-directed Aiyyary were scheduled for release then, the speculation had become stronger lately.
“The point is whether the producers will be adequately prepared to meet the 25th release date because the India release will be accompanied by an overseas release,” said film trade and exhibition expert Girish Johar. Out of the 5,500-odd workable screens in the country, Johar said Padman would have already blocked at least 1,500. This means Padmavat, which would have ideally got about 3,000-4,000 screens, will now get around 2,500 at the most.
Further, convincing individual state governments that have declared a ban on the film is an issue. Five states—Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar—have banned the film for now and Johar said they are all critical markets. To be sure, despite a clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a state is authorized to disallow the screening of a particular film. In the past, for instance, Aamir Khan’s Fanaa (2006) was banned in Gujarat after the actor took a stand on the Narmada Bachao Andolan issue.
Meanwhile, the Rajput Karni Sena has stuck to its demand for a complete ban on the film that it believes distorts historical facts and hurts the community’s sentiments. It has rejected the compromise that the censor board and the makers of Padmavat makers have arrived at, including a change in the title before agreeing to a U/A certificate. Other modifications include two disclaimers, one in the beginning and the other after the interval, a first for an Indian film, changes in the Ghoomar song featuring Padukone and removal of misleading references to historical places.

“This is the first time that the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) has been made to work under so much pressure and hire independent panellists besides its 200 members to view a film,” said a CBFC member, on the condition of anonymity. “Fringe elements should not disrupt the shows now, at least without watching the film.”
The person added that the Padmavat team was unlikely to wait much longer for theatrical release after the changes are incorporated, given the financial stakes involved. Atul Mohan, editor of trade magazine Complete Cinema, said that the year’s busy film schedule starts this weekend. The 12th weekend is booked by Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Kaalakaandi. While the Padman team has confirmed theatrical release on the 25, Aiyyary has reportedly been shifted to 9 February.
Meanwhile the Padmavat team itself wants some time to market the film in a positive light and put out non-controversial communication.
“Given what the film has gone through, we have to be very cautious now,” the Viacom18 spokesperson said.

Tiger Zinda Hai box office collection day 17: The rise and rise of Salman Khan’s film

Having swiftly moved past the coveted Rs 300 crore mark, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai has not shown any sign of slowing down.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the latest figures of the film saying, “It’s a TRIPLE CENTURY… #TigerZindaHai refuses to slow down… Crosses #Sultan… Now eyes #BajrangiBhaijaan [₹ 320.34 cr]… [Week 3] Fri 3.72 cr, Sat 5.62 cr. Total: ₹ 300.89 cr. India biz. #TZH.”

While it is almost futile to wonder why Tiger Zinda Hai is getting the incessant love of the audience even after two weeks from its release, the answer being the hardcore Bhai juggernaut.

What also worked in the film’s favour was the lack of any major releases in its following weeks. Yes, there were big Hollywood films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and All The Money In The World but Bollywood pretty much was going through a dull phase in terms of releases.

Next Friday, we have Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi hitting the theaters. Will the Akshat Verma directorial be able to hinder the rise and rise of Tiger Zinda Hai? We think not, since it is quite inconceivable for ardent Bhai fans to let go of their undue devotion.

Tiger Zinda Hai presents Salman in his best form, a suave, beefed up RAW agent entitled with a task only he can accomplish, the rescue of Indian nurses from terrorist kingpin, Abu Usman.

In an interview to indianexpress.com earlier, Salman had said, “People go to watch my films during festivals. They dress up, cheer and whistle. I have some other connect with my audience.

They just don’t want to see me cry on screen.” Well, we saw the result of that in Salman’s previous release Tubelight. But Tiger Zinda Hai, for that matter, is roaring high at the theaters.

WhatsApp on New Year's Eve: 20 Billion Messages Sent in India, 75 Billion Worldwide

WhatsApp says this is the highest-ever user activity on a single day

More than 13 billion images, 5 billion videos were shared worldwide

Interestingly, WhatsApp suffered an outage late on New Year’s eve

WhatsApp users in India sent over 20 billion messages on December 31 as they ushered in 2018 with wishes to family and friends. In a release, WhatsApp revealed that of the 75 billion messages shared on New Year’s Eve, 20 billion were just from India. These figures the highest-ever number of messages shared on the platform, which has over 1 billion users worldwide and counts India as its biggest market with 200 million users. It is notable that WhatsApp suffered an outage lasting more than an hour late on December 31, 2017 and in the early hours from January 1, 2018.

In a statement, WhatsApp said the 75 billion messages sent worldwide included more than 13 billion images and 5 billion videos. The company says it recorded this data is only for 12am to 11:59pm PST on December 31.

While this data represents huge volume and user activity on the platform, WhatsApp disappointed many in India when it went down as the clock struck midnight on January 1. The service went down across the country and users were unable to send messages to their loved ones for more than an hour. At the time, no reason for the outage was given by the company, which only said, “WhatsApp users around the world experienced a brief outage today that has now been resolved.”

In 2017, the Facebook-owned app introduced a number of new features and changes to the platform. These include the option to delete sent messages, arguably the biggest new feature since the blue ticks were introduced. Similarly, there were features such as the all-new Statuslive location sharing, etc. to keep users engaged. However, co-founder Brian Acton also left WhatsApp in 2017 to “start a non-profit focused at the intersection of nonprofit, technology and communications.”

Bhima Koregaon clash: 11 public transport buses damaged; E-way traffic hit

Traffic on Pune-Mumbai expressway was severely affected due to the three-hour ‘rasta roko aandolan’ by members of Dalit groups.

AT LEAST 11 buses run by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and the Pune Municipal Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) were damaged during protests held in the city and the ouskirts on Tuesday, officials said.
The protests were held in the aftermath of the clashes
between Dalit and Maratha groups that broke out on Monday in villages around Bhima Koregaon during celebrations to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregoan.

Traffic on Pune-Mumbai expressway was severely affected due to the three-hour ‘rasta roko aandolan’ by members of Dalit groups. Officials said as many as 8 to 9 buses were halted at Pimpri for over 4 to 6 hours. Srinivas Joshi, controller, Pune Division (MSRTC), said windows and windshields of three buses — Pune-Baramati (damaged at Bhekrai Nagar, Solapur Road), Daund-Tuljapur (damaged at Daund) and a stationery bus at Baramati Station — were damaged due to stonepelting.

On Monday, three other buses — Pune-Nagpur Shiv Shahi Volvo, Aurangabad-Pune and Alibuag-Aurangabad — were damaged by protesters, officials added. “A total of 139 buses have been damaged across the state,” an official with the MSRTC said. Officials with the PMPML said windshields of eight of their buses were damaged by protesters in different areas within the city and outskirts.
Subhash Gaikwad, public relations officer, PMPML, said, “Our depot managers have reported damage to buses at Awhalwadi, Ganganagar, Nehrunagar, Manjari, Sadhu Vaswani Chowk and Pune Railway Station.”
Both the transport bodies said services on none of the routes have been stalled but they were co-ordinating with the city and rural police to avoid sending buses to disturbed areas.
