Firangi movie review: This Kapil Sharma and Ishita Dutta starrer is mildly engaging

Firangi review: The trouble with this mildly engaging film, with a solid supporting cast, is that it is far too long. Kapil Sharma is serviceable as a young Punjabi munda, making eyes at a blushing Sargi

Firangi movie cast: Kapil Sharma, Ishita Dutta, Monica Gill
Firangi movie director: Rajiev Dhingra
Firangi movie rating: 2 stars

Last seen on the big screen, Kapil Sharma was playing footsie with multiple women, in what was an alleged sex comedy.

This time around, he takes himself off to the past, at a time when India was under the British, with wily rajas trying to wriggle out of paying tax, and a bunch of villagers trying to outsmart the ‘goras’.

Yes, you saw this in Lagaan’. In this redux version, Sharma plays Manga, a jobless fellow with a disarming smile, who is good pals with a bright-eyed ‘tange-wala’ (Inamulhaq), romances a blushing ‘gaon ki gori’, and, yes, beats the evil guys at their own game.

The leading man, also the producer, fashions a nice fit for himself: a family-oriented, family-friendly man, respectful to his elders, who may or may not be his betters. Very different from the crass Kapil Sharma of the comedy nights, which he clearly wants to put behind himself.

But the trouble with this mildly engaging film, with a solid supporting cast, is that it is far too long. Sharma is serviceable as a young Punjabi munda, making eyes at a blushing Sargi (Dutta). The setting, meant to be the 1920s, is all created on set, but you do initially manage to ignore the carefully crafted mud huts, because the language spoken is real, the gidda is homespun; as are the costumes.

The greedy whitey (Sonnenblick) is not half bad, even if he sounds more American than Brit, and there’s some fun to be had with Mishra camping it up as the local ruler with a large harem, and a haughty daughter who claims she went to Oxford, no less.
But it goes on and on. And on. Post interval, it slows down and begins to grate, even when the in-awe-of-the-`firangi’-hero comes to his own proud ‘desi’ roots.

Vodafone also recently launched two plans which offer 1GB data per day.

Vodafone's Rs. 458 prepaid recharge plan offers 1 GB 4G/3G/2G data per day,
along with unlimited local and STD calls, for a validity period of 70 days.

Xiaomi has announced that it will launch two new phones – Redmi 5, and Redmi 5 Plus in China – on December 7 in China. Both are expected to have 18:9 near bezel-less displays, which Xiaomi is referring to as 'full screen'.

Though Xiaomi hasn't revealed any details with its announcement poster, the TENNA listings of the devices supposed to be Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus talk about 5.7-inch HD+ screens, Snapdragon 450 (Redmi 5) and Snapdragon 625/630 (Redmi 5 Plus), and up to three RAM and storage variants.

For the Redmi 5, these will likely be 2GB/16GB, 3GB/32GB, and 4GB/64GB for RAM and storage respectively. Both new Redmi devices are expected to have a 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera, and run MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2.
The Redmi 5 Plus likely won't have a bigger screen, just an upgraded chipset and bigger battery (4000mAh vs 3200mAh).

A report claims that the Redmi 5 will have a price of CNY 1,399 (about Rs. 13,600), but we don't have to wait long to find out.

The Nokia 9 has yet to be announced by HMD Global, but a case for the phone has shown up on Amazon UK, which reveals the phone's front.
If the pictures are to be believed, the Nokia 9 will have a curved display, just like the one on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The case has a circular hole in the back, which suggest placement of the fingerprint scanner.
Given the case is already on sale, it seems the phone could launch soon.

Samsung's graphene ball tech could solve battery troubles

Samsung researchers have developed a new battery technology they call 'graphene ball', which could enable a 45 percent increase in battery capacity, and five times faster charging speeds.
With the new technology, Samsung says batteries need only 12 minutes to charge in theory. Graphene is an allotrope of carbon, and has long been considered as an alternative to silicon for processors, batteries, and other items.

More importantly for Samsung's future safety, graphene ball-based batteries run at cooler temperatures and can maintain a stable temperature of 60-degrees Celsius. Jokes aside, stable battery temperatures are important for electric vehicles.

Paytm Aims To Be World's Largest Digital Bank With 500 Million Accounts

Paytm Payments Bank was launched formally yesterdayIt will operate a mobile-first bank with zero fees on online transactionsPaytm was one entities that secured permit to start payments banks.

Paytm Payments Bank aims to create the world's largest digital bank with 500 million accounts, envisioning an online financial services provider of everything from wealth management to credit cards and stock market trading.
The bank, backed by the country's largest digital wallet of the same name, launched formally yesterday and is targeting people who don't have access to professional financial services. That aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambition to broaden access for the under-banked in the nation of 1.3 billion people.

"We are unveiling our money market fund, launching our debit card and we'll have the capabilities to allow enterprises to open business accounts," Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma said in a phone interview that coincided with a formal inauguration in Delhi attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. "Digital payments was our entry point, we want to become a vertically-integrated financial services company."

The government is supporting financial technology with incentives and a string of initiatives such as digital lockers and user-authentication based on its digital identity program, Aadhaar. Paytm was one of fewer than a dozen entities that secured permits to start payments banks, which can accept deposits and remittances but cannot lend.

It said it will operate a mobile-first bank with zero fees on online transactions and no minimum balance. Paytm Payments Bank is majority-owned by Sharma. One97 Communications, which operates Paytm and is backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Jack Ma's Ant Financial, holds the remaining 49 percent. The bank grew out of Paytm's digital wallet, which amassed over a hundred million customers after India took high-denomination bills - or nearly 90 percent of the value of cash - out of circulation last November.

Sharma may have found a way around the regulatory hurdles that bar lending.  One97 Communications will introduce a charge card and offer monthly installment-based loans, he said. "We will launch share trading and insurance products very soon," he added. "We want to become an internet-age financial services company."

In India, the traditional banking system veers heavily toward those with wealth as poorer citizens struggle to pay bills or transfer money to relatives. "Buying insurance and investing through our wealth management products will become widely accessible through the payments bank," said Sharma.

Despite the proliferation of smartphones and cheap data rates bringing internet access to millions, traditional lenders have yet to build large digital banking capabilities. And Indian consumers aren't yet entirely comfortable with digital financial startups. Sharma said that works in Paytm's favor.
