Jal Satyagraha to nude protest against AFSPA: Five extreme forms of agitations that shook everyone

( Click Here To latest aaps news join our facebook gruop )

Unique forms of discomfort-inducing protest acts have been taken up in some cases to give more power and visibility to their expression.

Organic and dynamic, protests have often provided outlet for the relatively dispossessed or the disadvantaged subaltern relegated to the back burners of state conscience. Modern India has a long history of protests to power, starting with the pan-India Gandhian Satyagrahas to demand a nation free of the yolk of British raj. In the absence or failure of other avenues of redressal, peaceful protests call attention to urgent grievances, legitimise demands publicly and are a collective manifestation of freedom of expression. Unique forms of discomfort-inducing protest acts have been taken up in some cases to give more power and visibility to their expression. Here are five examples, recent and old:

‘Zameen Samadhi Satyagraha’ at Nindar village, near Jaipur:Currently protesting against the Jaipur Development Authority’s (JDA) move to acquire their land (1,350 bighas) for a housing project, about 50 farmers have dug out holes and buried themselves neck deep in the ground. The protesters include older women. JDA’s land acquisition project was initiated a fortnight ago, which led to the farmers sitting on a dharna for 15 days which did not yield result. Thus this new form of Satyagraha has been initiated to make a stronger statement.
Tamil Nadu farmers’ protest near Jantar Mantar, New Delhi: Heavily debt ridden and drought struck farmers from Tamil Nadu, almost 100 in number, have been in the news for a while for their repeated protests at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. They allege that they are incapable to growing crops under the present weather conditions and have been demanding loan waivers, revised drought packages and a Cauvery Management committee and fair prices for their products. In a desperate bid for government attention to their demands, many extreme and unconventional acts have been employed by them, such as biting mice, holding skulls and bones (allegedly of their peers who committed suicide) and threats of consuming their own excreta and urine.

‘Jal Satyagraha’ in Goghalgaon village in Khandwa district, MP:Led by the Narmada Bachao Aandolan, around 50 villagers — men and women — residing in the low lying regions of the Omkareshwar dam on Narmada river near Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, sat in neck-deep river water for seventeen days in September 2012, demanding compensation and rehabilitation from the government as it gave orders to lift the dam gates. Faced by the prospect of flooded homes and shattered livelihoods, the ‘satyagrahis’ were bitten by fishes and developed several skin ailments in this period.

The protest was called off after the government agreed to their demands. A relief package of 212 crores was cleared for them in May 2013. A similar protest was undertaken in 2013 by other villagers in Khandwa, Dewas and Harda districts of MP, whose settlements lay in the low lying areas of the Indira Sagar Dam.

Manipuri women’s nude protest against AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act): “We are all Manorama’s mothers,” screamed the 12 Manipuri women as they took off their sarongs and stood stark naked in front of Kangla Fort in Imphal, the then headquarters of the Assam Rifles. They came from low-income families — mostly residing outside the capital. The oldest protester was 73, and the youngest, 45. They carried banners: “Indian Army, rape us”, “Indian Army, kill us” (army being a loosely used term).

32-year old Thangjam Manorama had been picked up from her house under suspicion of militancy by paramilitary Assam Rifles soldiers on July 11, 2014. Her mutilated body, raped and ridden with bullets, was found later and heavily militarised Manipur fired into unprecedented anger. The idea of a nude protest was first discussed on July 12, 2004 at a meeting of the All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj, but agreed upon only later when the women agreed that ‘desperate times called for desperate measures’. The idea made them deeply uncomfortable and, fearful of their life and honor, many did not even inform their families of what they were about to do.
The protest lasted only 45 minutes but left an indelible mark — jolting the nation and world with Manipuri mothers’ anger and anguish. The protesters didn’t have it easy in the aftermath; the community immediately celebrated them but they were harassed by an embarrassed government, accused of arson and waging war against the nation and nine of them spent three months in jail. Four months after the protest, Assam Rifles vacated the Kangla Fort which they had occupied since 1949 and AFSPA was lifted from a few areas in Imphal.

However, Manorama’s killers have not been brought to justice yet and AFSPA still looms heavy in large parts of the state.

Chipko Movement against deforestation in Uttarakhand: A global pioneer, the Chipko movement of saving trees by hugging them began as an organised resistance against deforestation and logging abuse, undertaken by the native communities, often women and children, in 1973. The first Chipko action took place spontaneously in April 1973 in the village of Mandal in the upper Alakananda valley of erstwhile Uttar Pradesh where the tribal women went into the fobrest and formed a protective circle around it. Over the next five years, the movement spread to many other districts of Garhwal, out of which the pioneering tree-hugging action led by Gaura Devi in her village, Reni, is well known.

The sustained success of the movement, gaining momentum under leaders like the gandhian eco-activist Sunderlal Bahuguna, not only saved thousands of trees from being felled but also influenced a younger India’s natural resource policy. The activist movement catalysed the instating of a 15-year ban on felling by the Indira Gandhigovernment in 1980 which was implemented in not only Uttar Pradesh but also other states with forest covers.

Apple iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone SE:
Apple iPhone 6s with 32GB storage is retailing at Rs 38,883. Again, this is not a bad deal for the older iPhone, but users can consider the iPhone 7 at Rs 39,999 for the 32GB version. Apple iPhone 7 has a similar pricing on Flipkart and Amazon India and under Rs 40,000 is a solid price for the one year old device. However, the iPhone 7 series does not have a dual-rear camera.
For those who want an Apple iPhone under Rs 20,000, iPhone SE is listed at Rs 18,999 on Amazon India for the 32GB variant. The bigger iPhone 7 plus will cost Rs 61,999 for the 128GB version, and this does come with the dual rear camera. This deal is listed on Flipkart.
Overall what iPhone you pick online, be it from Flipkart or Amazon depends on the budget and the deals are very similar. However, if you have a phone to exchange, you can compare to see which e-commerce player will give you more money in order to score some extra discount on the iPhone.  Right now, given the deals, the iPhone 7’s discount offer is an option worth considering.
Apple AirPods at Rs 10,999:
Finally, Apple AirPods are retailing at Rs 10,999, which Flipkart says is a discount from the original price of Rs 12,900, though remember these were launched at closer to Rs 15,000. Apple AirPods are wireless earphones, and can connect with your iOS device automatically and can be used to activate Siri as well. For Apple iPhone users, these AirPods are one of the best accessories to consider. Flipkart is also offering 10 per cent cashback with Axis Bank Credit and Debit Cards.

( Click Here To latest aaps news join our facebook gruop )

Investigating officer in the case, sub-inspector (S-I) Shamshad Ali said the girl came to the police station along with her 12-year-old sister and a neighbour on Tuesday and told them of the alleged crime.

A 16-year-old girl in Sambhal district allegedly killed her father on Monday night after he allegedly raped her, police said. The man had allegedly been sexually assaulting his daughter since the last two years and had allegedly murdered her mother nine years ago.

Police added that the girl, an illiterate, took the step in self defence, and so far has not take any action against her. On the girl’s complaint, an FIR has been lodged against her deceased father on rape charges. Police have also invoked Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) against the deceased.
Investigating officer in the case, sub-inspector (S-I) Shamshad Ali said the girl came to the police station along with her 12-year-old sister and a neighbour on Tuesday and told them of the alleged crime.

“The girl told us that her father had been raping her for the last two years. He had allegedly threatened to kill her if she complained about it to anyone. She said she had complained to her blind grandmother, but she was not able to help her,” the IO said.

“The girl said that on Monday night her father came home heavily drunk and raped her. When he tried to assault her again, she hit him with a stick on his head. He had allegedly been injured on the head earlier too. After this blow, he died on the spot.”

The police registered the case and sent the girl for a medical examination.
“We have requested a DNA test to ascertain sexual assault. We recorded statements of several villagers. They have claimed that the girl’s father was known for his bad behaviour and habits and alleged that he had killed his wife nine years ago,” said S-I Ali adding that the investigation has added IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide) against the girl.
Considering IPC Section 100 in the case against the girl, no action has been taken so far against her, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Sambhal) Pankaj Kumar Pandey.
“Investigation has begun and on the basis of evidences, police will initiate further action. We are also seeking legal opinion in the case,” he added.

Airtel Offers 3GB Data Per Day at Rs. 799 to Prepaid Customers, Competes With Jio’s iPhone Plan

Less than a week after Jio announced an exclusive plan for iPhone users, Airtel has launched a similar plan with 84GB of bundled data. The new AirtelRs. 799 plan is available only for prepaid users, and comes with unlimited STD and local calls, and validity of 28 days.

This plan is in direct competition with the aforementioned Jio Rs. 799 pack that is only provided to iPhone users and comes with 3GB of daily data allowance, as well as free calls and SMSes and Jio apps subscription. This is the latest skirmish between the market leader and the telecom upstart that launched operations a year ago.

As with other plans, the ‘unlimited’ calls are actually restricted to 250 minutes per day and 1,000 minutes per week for both local and STD calls. Those who buy the new Airtel plan via Airtel Payments Bank will get cashback of Rs. 75.
→→(Click Here To For All Banking News)←← The new Airtel plan is positioned between the Rs. 549 and Rs. 999 plans that offer 2GB data per day and 4GB data per day, respectively. Both these plans also provide unlimited local and STD calls as well. BSNL was the first telecom operator to offer a recharge pack with 3GB data per day, with its Triple Ace plan in April.

Airtel, Jio, and BSNL – along with Vodafone and Idea Cellular – have been locked in a battle to win market share amid tough competition in the telecom sector. Jio has amassed a user base of over 125 million within a year of launching operations, during which the industry has seen data becoming cheaper and free calls commonly available with plans by major operators.

Jio Rs. 149 Plan Gets Unlimited Data, Google Pixel 2 Leaks, and More: Your 360 Daily

Reliance Jio has eased the data restrictions on its Rs. 149 prepaid plan, which now offers unlimited data at 64kbps after you run out your 2GB allotment for the 28-day validity period. Earlier, customers had to avail a top-up voucher to continue Internet services. The post-FUP speed is still half of what you get on other Jio plans, but it'll help those in situations where you'd have been cut off.

In other Jio-related news, a representative of the telecom operator has confirmed that the maximum duration of a single call on its network is five hours. If Jio subscribers cross that limit on any given day, all outgoing call services are restricted for the rest of that day. To restore calls, users would then need to top up with Rs. 149. The limit is only on a five-hour call for Jio customers, which means you're allowed to make multiple hour-long calls to your friends as long as all of them are below that threshold.
Google Pixel 2, XL 2 press renders leaked; Android Oreo climbs to 0.2 percent:
We're merely a day away from the launch of Google's second-generation Pixel phones, but they've shown up in all their glory thanks to tipster Evan Blass. Blass posted press renders of both the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 on his Twitter account on Sunday, which show the smaller phone with a 5-inch 16:9 display and the bigger one with an 18:9 screen. Going by the images, it seems that both new Pixel phones won't have a rear dual camera setup.

Elsewhere, Google has updated its Google Play distribution data, which shows that 0.2 percent of Android devices are now running the latest version, 8.0 Oreo. Nougat meanwhile has gone up by two points to 17.8, while Marshmallow still commands the lead at a whopping 32 percent.
Apple 'looking into' reports of iPhone 8 Plus splitting open:
Two users of the new iPhone 8 Plus have shared images of their phone splitting open owing to a swollen battery, which has attracted enough attention to warrant a comment from Apple. The Cupertino giant said that it's "looking into" the two reported cases, according to The Independent. One of the buyers, a Taiwanese woman, noticed the front panel bulging out after just three minutes of charge. The other, a Japanese, tweeted photos of his phone which have since attracted almost 15,000 retweets.

All Nokia phones will get Android P:
It's not been long since the arrival of Android Oreo, but Nokia brand owner HMD Global is already taking about Android P. The company has confirmed that all current Nokia phones – the Nokia 3, the Nokia 5, the Nokia 6, and the Nokia 8 – will be upgraded to Android Oreo by the end of the year, and receive Android P when it's released, likely next year.
Ola receives $2 billion in funding:
Ola, India's domestic competitor to Uber, has secured $2 billion(roughly Rs. 13,114 crores) in a new round of funding from investors including SoftBank and Tencent, according to Bloomberg. The funding round is still in progress, which means the amount might rise going forward. The new raise pushes the company's valuation to $3.8 billion (roughly Rs. 24,889 crores).
Xiaomi's September total was more than 10 million:
Xiaomi shipped more than 10 million smartphones worldwide in the month of September, its CEO Lei Jun has announced. Alongside, Xiaomi's India head Manu Kumar Jain shared that it has sold a total of 25 million smartphones since entering the country roughly three years ago. Xiaomi is still getting beat in its home market of China by Huawei, which shipped 38.4 million devices in Q2 2017 to Xiaomi's total of 23.16 million.
Mate 10 Pro leaks, Honor Holly 4 India launch, and Huawei Nova 2i unveiled:
A little under two weeks from its official launch, Huawei's Mate 10 Pro has shown up in leaked press renders, which shows the phone with an 18:9 screen and dual cameras at the back. The Leica brand name is also visible at the back, which confirms that the Chinese company has worked with the German optics firm again. There's also the mention of f/1.6 aperture, which makes it the largest value on par with the LG V30. A tipster suggests that the Mate 10 Promight be priced at EUR 930-940 (roughly Rs. 72,000).
Meanwhile, Huawei launched the Honor Holly 4 in India on Tuesday, whose highlights include a fingerprint sensor, 13-megapixel camera, dual-SIM support, and a metal design. The phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat on a 5-inch HD display, powered by a Snapdragon 430 and 3GB of RAM. It costs Rs. 11,999, and is available for purchase in Honor partner stores offline starting now. The Holly 4 has three colour variants: Gold, Grey, and Silver.
And in Malaysia, Huawei unveiled the Nova 2i on Tuesday. It has a 5.9 full-HD 18:9 FullView display, and a total of four cameras: two on the front, and two on the back. That makes it capable of shooting bokeh-capable portraits with blurred backgrounds. The front cameras are 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel, while the rear ones are 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel. Both the lesser-resolution sensors are used for perceiving depth.
